The velvety torch-and-twang tenor of singer/songwriter Ambrosia Parsley -- her name alone is delicious -- permeates Shivaree's third full-length record like smoke through a saloon filled with carnies. The trio's sophisticated blend of spacious alt-country and dark pop with Tin Pan Alley sensibilities -- keyboardist Danny McGough toured with Tom Waits -- more than lives up to the band name, which is derived from the French word "charivari," meaning "a noisy mock serenade (made by banging pans and kettles) to a newly married couple." Parsley, who sounds like a mischievous composite of Neko Case, Jill Sobule, and Aimee Mann, feels just as natural assuming the role of torchy vamp ("Lost in a Dream") as she does a wounded heart pining for her "Mexican Boyfriend," and "Little Black Mess," with its sensuous strings and jazzy piano, comes off like a moon-drunk cross between Björk and Nick Cave. At its core, Who's Got Trouble? is the soundtrack to a late-night road trip, and nowhere is that more apparent than on the subtle closer, "I Will Go Quietly." With its atmospheric banjo bookends and lonely last-cigarette-before-the-sun-comes-up imagery, it leaves the listener with an alarming sense of place and an unsettling case of Twin Peaks creeps. ~ James Christopher Monger

Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "Parsley's impish, barbed voice conveys innocent wonder and worldly insight, a balance that's perfectly suited to her lyrics' plaintive melancholy and sly wit." - Grade: B+ Uncut (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[H]er torch songs contain deliciously tantalising hints of some dark secret locked away in her past and a forbidden lush that refuses to be denied." Who's Got Trouble? music CDs
$13.15 The Mosquitos' second album, Sunshine Barato, is no departure from their first as it is also a sunny, happy, laid-back disc that melds the sweet sounds of Brazilian pop with a simple and direct indie pop approach. In simple terms, Astrud or Bebel Gilberto meets Belle & Sebastian or the Pastels. If that sounds like your idea of musical heaven, this is the record for you. It doesn't reach the heights of the best bossa nova or indie pop but this is probably the best mixture of the two over the course of an entire album. The goofy everyman vocals of Chris Root blend perfectly with ...
| | Holding Sky From The Throne To The Lions CD (2008)
Who's Got Trouble? songs
$14.19 Holding.Sky burst onto the Hamilton music scene in early 2005 hitting Ontario full steam ahead. Tim Laidman, Kohji Nagata, Michael Hill, Ben Tillmann and Bourke Tillmann have not only won the loyalty of fans with their raw music, they have also found acceptance amongst local critics with their ability to avoid the screamo wave that seams to be sweeping the underground while still expressing the frustrations of youth. This is music made from passion. With two members being in medical school and the other three all having post-graduate degrees you would think Holding.Sky would be a weekend gig. Instead they have walked out of emergency rooms, driven through snow storms (wrecking once so far), and told bosses that loved ones have died in order to bring their musical message to whichever venue will have them on stage for the night. It is through this determination that Holding.Sky has been around for the past three years. At each show new fans are formed and pass on the message ...
