If the glacial dynamics of previous metal and hardcore abstractions Celestial and Oceanic didn't prove that Isis was a heavy band in every sense, then Panopticon should do the trick. The title comes from 18th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham's prison design, which was later referenced by Michael Foucault in the 20th century. The idea is that a centrally placed guard or watcher can keep track of a large number of prisoners, and it excited Bentham and concerned Foucault. Heavy stuff for a metal band, huh? Both are quoted in the liner notes, bookended by aerial industrial photos laying out society's open sprawl. It fits perfectly with the epic music on the disc itself, which is as angular ...

Funny how progressive metal pioneers Neurosis existed in a virtual creative vacuum for almost a decade before the similarly inventive Isis tapped into their musical teachings, expanded upon them, and, in turn, magically opened the floodgates for hundreds of other bands to materialize from the ether and begin weaving monumental trance epics of their own design. Naturally, as has always been the case with new trends in popular (and even not-so-popular) music, the hordes of faceless bandwagon-jumpers greatly outweighed the promising successors, which included Arkansas dirt-encrusted sound technicians Rwake, Chicago instrumental alchemists Pelican, and, for our purposes here, Ohio's magicians of sublime melancholy, Mouth of the Architect. For you see, although they construct ...

Stories Of Our Lives
Dear John Letters Stories Of Our Lives CD  (2003)

Two music CDs
CD $9.79  Audio Samples
Too jittery for emo and too quirky for pop, Seattle's Dear John Letters combine a variety of genres into their difficult-to-classify sound. Although the band works well together and producer/guitarist/engineer Johnny Sangster (Mudhoney, the Posies) certainly had substantial input, this is pretty much Robb Benson's baby. It's his keening voice, often stream-of-consciousness lyrics, and overall vision that make -- or break -- the group's third release. Tightening up their attack and re-recording a handful of songs from their sophomore effort, Unbroken ("Disappointed," "My Volcano," "Sorry to Sorry," "We Could Be Angels"), this is certainly their most focused and cohesive album. Taking lyrics from a variety of sources, including old girlfriends' poetry (hence the band's name), Benson spits and talk-sings songs in a cracked, wobbly, trembling voice, somewhere between the Kinks' Ray Davies, Ian Hunter, and Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook. Benson's much-noted McCartney-isms have taken a back seat to his minor-key side, which drives vaguely pop tunes like the dark "I Still Scar," an emotionally overwrought song as intense as its title where Benson plays all the instruments, including drums and piano. Thankfully, the open-wound agony of that tune is offset by the generally upbeat music of "The Drowning," whose peppy beat and hooky chorus mask downbeat lyrics such as, "Don't fight the drowning/The struggle makes it worse." "My head is my worst enemy," writes Benson in "Disappointed," and there's plenty of proof of that here. But for those who can feel his pain, Stories of Our Lives is a minor masterpiece. At 14 tracks and just under 50 minutes, Benson proves he's one of his generation's most talented, if depressed, pop voices. ~ Hal Horowitz Dear John letters frontman Robb Benson plays live:July 9thuncommon ground www.uncommonground.com chicago, il Dear John Letters Plays first live show in 8 months:July 29th, 21+the crocodile cafe (Seattle) w/Radio Nationals*benefit for driving votes*Then:July 30th, 21+Robb Benson CD release partythe sunset tavern (seattle) with: Scott McCoughey (of REM, YYF, minus 5) Sean Nelson (of harvey danger, long winters)also Dear john letters, & other guests!*EARLY SHOW 7pm to 9:30PM****************Throughout the history of poetry, the inspiration for writing poems has been found in the most innocuous of places. Jack Kerouac heard jazz verses in the gears of the trains that rolled through America while Walt Whitman heard his name being passed through the leaves of the trees. For Seattle's DEAR JOHN LETTERS' singer/songwriter Robb Benson, he senses poems that seem to originate from the internal world, and inherently compliments the form within his song craft. "For me it's like a channel, he says, "I just let them flow through me. I enjoy it when words have rhythm or if they just sound great together no matter what the meaning is behind them. A true giant of Cuban music, Chucho Valdés has also been one of the world's top jazz pianists during the past few decades. Doble Gigante has a strong sampling of his work from several different time periods. The opening "Chorrino" is a trio outing from 1997 and there are three quartet showcases from 1965 that show that Valdés had his own original style from early in his career. The remainder of this CD is from 1978. "Este Camino Largo" is an excellent duet with altoist Paquito d'Rivera, and "Mambo Influenciado" puts trumpeter Arturo Sandoval in the spotlight. The other eight selections feature Irakere, the Cuban jazz and world music group that Valdés founded and led for many years. Some of the selections ...

The concept of four Australian Idol alumni joining together to form a pop group is quite unique for the global Idol franchise. Rarely do these types of formations form, and even less often, stick, especially since, by the time of print of this review, Ricki-Lee Coulter has already left the group and been replaced. Nonetheless, the team of producers who formed the Young Divas, and their record label, Sony BMG, went for it anyways, signing these girls up with a record deal after a brief experimental tour. The product is not much different than the Idol format or the title of the group itself. It is a collection of covers by the famous divas of the past decades. The album has covers originally by Donna Summer, Irene Cara, the Weather Girls, and so many more. In some ways, this approach to a post-Idol album is a good thing. It doesn't stray too far from anything that the girls, Emily Williams, Kate DeAraugo, Paulini, and Ricki-Lee Coulter have performed on the show. Plus, their voices mesh seamlessly on tracks like "Happenin' All Over Again" and "This Time I Know It's for Real", which were the albums first two singles (and the strongest tracks on the album). However, one can totally argue against the quality of the album for the same reasons. It's an album of covers; it has no original material, which makes it difficult to determine the strength of the writing and potential of these girls. There is no redeeming artistic originality on the album, however new remixes of several songs are unique. Plus, the girls all play second fiddle throughout the album to each other, instead of having one lead singer. While some of the covers work perfectly, others seem affected and forced (See "Let's Hear It for the Boy"). At times, the girls strain to be the lead vocalists, and there are points where the ladies attempt to shout over each other to be the most heard. Ultimately, this album is more for an avid fan of Australian Idol more than anything else, four ex-contestants (including a winner of the franchise, DeAruago) singing Idol classics. Or, if you're someone who loves to hear a modern take on some timeless hits by four knock-out voices, this is an album right up your alley. However, the market for this album doesn't really appeal to much more than that. Time will tell if the Young Divas will really become bona-fide stars. I'm still waiting for ...
