Dvorák: Cello Concerto; Walton: Cello Concerto / Piatigorksy CD

 Inspired conducting, bored cellist
I bought this based on the Living Stereo legend. This new SACD sounds GREAT. A true 3 channel recording. Unfortunately, the cello sounds so far away, even if you play this in standard stereo mode. I tried increasing the center channel and didn't do any good. To make matters worse, Piatigorsky doesn't even compar to Jaqueline Du Pre in her version with Barenboim or Rostropovich with Guilini. Both are much more inspired cellist than Gregor. Gregor's opening is SO TAME, with no excitement or passion. He sounds like he's bored. This is unfortunate, because Charles Munch does a great job of conducting the BSO. Pass this one up and spend your money on Du Pre or Rostropovich instead.

 One of the few recording of a musical giant.
Piatigorsky was not only a physical giant of a man was a musical giant on the cello. In this recording one can hear his powerful musical strength and delicate nuances musical within these two great cello concertos. The sound reconstruction is on par for an early digitally recorded 16 bit CD.
