The Danish death metal scene isn't nearly as well known beyond the country's borders as that of their Scandinavian brethren, which is one of the main reasons why Exmortem have been releasing albums consistently for over a decade without penetrating worldwide consciousness beyond a small cult following. Frankly, the other is that they're not really that interesting. From the curiously blasé album title onward, Nihilistic Contentment is strictly death metal-by-numbers; technically, these ten tracks are faultless in terms of speed, precision, and flash, but there's very little happening here in terms of listener engagement. Exmortem are the death metal equivalent of all of those samey third-string punk bands who have memorized every second of the Ramones' first four albums, but lack the vision to add anything new to their influences; listening to Nihilistic Contentment will just make the average death metal fan want to go put on his old Morbid Angel records. ~ Stewart Mason

On X's sophomore effort, 1981's WILD GIFT, the quartet made a conscious effort to solidify their songwriting and sound. While some of the jagged edges have been smoothed out, compared to their rough-and-ready debut, LOS ANGELES, there is still plenty of punk rock energy and attitude to go around. Once again, former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek is on board as producer, and the results are just as impressive. The obvious standout is "White Girl," a punk pop ditty that foreshadowed such later bands as the Pixies and Nirvana, and would have been a smash hit in a perfect world. Also included are such subsequent X standards as "We're Desperate," "In This House That I Call Home," and the rockabilly rocker "Beyond and Back" (which would later serve as a title track for a double-disc 1997 anthology of the band). The 2001 Rhino Records reissue contains seven bonus tracks, including a demo take of "Blue Spark" (which would be recut for their third album, UNDER THE BIG BLACK SUN) and a single mix of the aforementioned gem, "White Girl." Like Rhino's 2001 reissue of the Ramones' Leave Home, which offered more bonus material than the group's debut, the label's 2001 expanded reissue of X's second album, Wild Gift, offers more (and more interesting) bonus tracks than Los Angeles. Of course, Wild Gift isn't the dip in quality that Leave Home was -- it's the equal of Los Angeles, only with a wider stylistic reach -- so it doesn't need the added enticement that Leave Home did, but the addition of single versions of "We're Desperate" and "White Girl," live versions of "Beyond and Back" and "Back 2 the Base," a hot rehearsal version of "Heater," an early demo of "Blue Spark," and the previously unissued single mix of "The Once Over Twice" are all nice extras. These, along with Kristine McKenna's liner notes, enhance an already terrific ...

Limp Bizkit Results May Vary CD  (2003)

Nihilistic Contentment songs
CD $12.65  3.9 stars Audio Samples
From the infamous open-call auditions to the eleventh hour recruitment of former Snot axeman Mike Smith, finding a suitable guitarist to replace Wes Borland proved to be a daunting task for Limp Bizkit. Pushing off somewhat from their trademark rap-metal model, the songs that comprise RESULTS MAY VARY display a band reaching musically. "Gimme the Mic" carries on the spirit the band found success with on SIGNIFICANT OTHER, but the majority of this latest effort finds frontman Fred Durst and company leaning towards a more melodic and musical stance, both instrumentally and vocally. Nods to contemporaries sneak in on "Eat You Alive" and "Down Another Day," (with a clear Tool influence prevailing), and uber-producer Brendan O'Brien mixes in a crisp, biting production. The lyrics to the classic Who track "Behind Blue Eyes" struck enough of a responsive chord with Durst that he was inspired to cover it, going so far as to add an additional verse. Rap metal may be going the way of the dinosaur, but Limp Bizkit seems to have the staying power to carry on. It took a long, long time for Limp Bizkit to get their follow-up to Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water into the stores. First, guitarist Wes Borland, generally regarded as the band's musical force, up and left the band, and it took a long, long time to find a replacement guitarist. After a national talent search performed at Guitar Center stores, where candidates had to sign contracts that gave up their rights to anything original they played at their audition, Limp Bizkit settled on former Snot guitarist Mike Smith and recorded an album. Then scrapped it. Then they recorded another album. Then scrapped it. They were going through album titles, too ...
