| | Semper Satago CD
Domino Records established itself as one of the premier indie labels and the 2005 Semper Satago shows why. The lineup of bands on the label is knock-down impressive and ranges from world-beaters like Franz Ferdinand and Clinic to obscure geniuses like Juana Molina and James Yorkston & the Athletes, with loads of worthy groups and artists in between. Listening to the collection, one is struck by the lack of a defining label sound or even a clear identity. Instead they just seem to collect bands that sound good to them. How else can you reconcile the country noise of Sons and Daughters with the smooth electro-pop of the Junior Boys or the gutter blues of the Archie Bronson Outfit or the glittering techno rock of the Notwist? All credit goes to an adept A&R staff with golden ears. Their first label compilation features mostly tracks from albums but also picks up a few semi-rarities like Clinic's brief "Nicht" taken from the flip of the Magician 7", the Jay Dee mix of Four Tet's "As Serious as Your Life" from the 12" single of the same name, and Franz Ferdinand's "Love & Destroy" taken from the Michael CD-5 single. An indie rock collection this steady and challenging is pretty rare; that it all comes from one label is pretty darn amazing. ~ Tim Sendra

Semper Satago CD music
$8.89 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored ...

| | Tommy Cash Winners CD (2006)
Semper Satago CD music
$11.79 The younger brother of Johnny Cash, and with a voice somewhat similar, it's hard to say whether Tommy Cash has prospered or suffered by that association on a career level. He's had his own hits, certainly, most notably "Six White Horses" in 1969, and "Rise and Shine" and "One Song Away" a year later in 1970, but nothing really significant since, and while his recorded output is solid honky tonk fare, his style doesn't really seem to fit with the flashy, pop-drenched 21st century trappings of contemporary country. Ah, but then neither did brother Johnny's style, either, so maybe it's worth taking another look at what Tommy Cash brings to the table. Winners affords the perfect opportunity to do so, since it includes the above mentioned hits plus key tracks from his 25th Anniversary Album from 1991 and Let an Old Racehorse Run from 1995, becoming, in effect, a retrospective sampler. "Six White Horses," a moving tribute to JFK, RFK and MLK, is easily the best thing Tommy has ever done, and it fittingly leads things off here. Also included are several ...
