| | Donald Harrison Free Style CD - Import Donald Harrison Discography of CDs
Donald Harrison plays quite well throughout this set, displaying a distinctive tone and a consistently creative style within the genre of straight-ahead jazz. All but the last two selections feature him accompanied by bassist Vicente Archer and drummer John Lamkin, both of whom stay very much in the background, often playing repetitive and somewhat dull figures. Pianist Glenn Patscha is on three numbers without making an impression, while the final two songs have Harrison joined by Ron Carter and Billy Cobham. The idea behind this outing is not described in the brief liner notes. Harrison's alto solos are excellent and varied but it is a pity that all of the support he receives is very anonymous, laid-back and unimaginative. Was this on purpose? But fans of Donald Harrison are still advised to pick this one up for his playing. ~ Scott Yanow

Down Beat (p.80) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "Sounding comfortable, Harrison blows with verve and confidence, sending out a short melodic bitten-off phrasing, but tellingly, he seems to shine the brightest when the beats loosen up." Donald Harrison Free Style Songs Free Style Review

$10.05 Few arrangers have attempted to score John Coltrane's landmark suite A Love Supreme for good reason: it is very difficult to stand up to the emotional impact of the composer's original recording. | | Goran Ivanovic Seven Boats, Music For Two Guitar CD (2004)
Free Style CD music
$15.19 When duo guitarists Goran Ivanovic and Fareed Haque released Macedonian Blues in 2001, a remarkable musical collaboration was born. Now that partnership is extended and solidified with Seven Boats, an all-new collection of original music for two guitars. Infused once again with the modes and rhythms of the Balkans, filled with humor, dazzling virtuosity and tender melodic invention, this new disc is a treasure trove for lovers of Jazz, Classical and World music alike. Goran Ivanovic and Fareed Haque are two of the most gifted guitarists performing today. Their styles and backgrounds are vastly different, but as the Chicago Tribune wrote of them "...when their two guitars play, cultural barriers melt away." Chicago's Reader has said, "Ivanovic is an exuberant interpreter...his tremendous energy is tempered with finesse and introspection...so that even the flashiest passages are graceful." Jazz critic Neil Tesser has remarked that Haque "possesses one of the great guitar techniques in modern music." Their amazing empathy and jaw dropping daredevil displays are heard to perfection in "Gypsy Circus" and "Chase," but the heart of the collection is in the gently rocking improvisations of "Seven Boats," and in "Walls ...
