A quick sophomore release following the previous year's Baker Sings Chet, Monologue is another chance for jazz singer Jeff Baker to come out of his Idahoan hiding place. The songs vary a good deal more than the Chet Baker repertoire of his debut, and provide a larger palette for him to work with. As such, there's a greater spectrum of sound as a result. Baker holds on to a melancholy tune quite well, opening the album with a couple of such numbers. Other pieces demand a slightly faster, more jumping approach. Baker doesn't disappoint, but his seemingly Hartman-inspired delivery tends to lag behind the tune a bit. He's got a careful approach to the vocals of a given song, which works to present the slow standards as nurtured, crafted works. At the same time however, those with a quicker pulse seem to get away from him a bit. Baker's voice is the star of the show, despite good shows from the backing band as a whole, with special note going to pianist Bill Anschell and Brent Jensen, both of whom take extended solos at leisure. For those curious about Baker's rising abilities, Baker Sings Chet may prove a better introductory album. This one will be a nice addition for those who enjoyed the debut. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Roy Orbison 50 All Time Greatest Hits CDs (2002)
Monologue CD music
$18.49 Perhaps Collectables Records should not get their hopes up on receiving "Truth in Advertising" awards for this two-disc Roy Orbison collection; a handy double set which compiled Orbison's classic Monument sides along with highlights from his releases for Sun, M-G-M, and Virgin would be a more than welcome addition to his catalog, but despite the title that's not what 50 All Time Greatest Hits has on board. This set features a whopping 47 tunes from Orbison's Monument years, with his three best known Sun sides ("Ooby Dooby," "Rock House," and "Go! Go! Go!") closing out disc two. All of Roy's classic '60s hits can be found on disc one, while a healthy selection of covers and lesser-knowns dominate the second half; it's all splendid material, even if ...

Monologue music CDs
$13.89 Latin Genesis is a summit meeting of three top-notch saxophonists: Dave Liebman, Don Braden, and Dan Moretti. Together, they put a Latin spin on material from Elvin Jones' 1971 album Genesis (which also featured three front-line saxes and was Liebman's first record date with the great drummer). Electric bassist Oscar Stagnaro and drummer Mark Walker provide rhythmic backing, along with guest percussionists Pernell Saturnino, Jorge Najarro, and Rick Andrade. The four cuts from Genesis are Frank Foster's "Cecilia Is Love," ...

Monologue songs
$14.65 In the early fall of 2005, Tim O'Brien simultaneously released two albums, Cornbread Nation and Fiddler's Green, on Sugar Hill. And while both dig deep into the fabric of American roots music, the albums also revealed O'Brien's split musical personality, a split that dates back to his work with Hot Rize/Red Knuckles & the Trailblazers during the 1980s. Cornbread Nation gives birth to the more expansive side of his neo-traditional core, allowing him to borrow from country ...
