| | Bart Davenport Maroon Cocoon CD Bart Davenport Discography of CDs
On his third solo album, Maroon Cocoon, Bart Davenport scales back the wide-ranging classic rock sound of his previous album, Game Preserve, and delivers a very intimate and personal record. The majority of the songs feature Davenport's achingly pretty vocals with only a lone acoustic guitar for accompaniment. In fact, he plays almost all the instruments on the record himself. Co-producer Sam Flax Keener provides the occasional sax and recorder, Greg Moore adds harmony vocals to "Following a Red Balloon," and Tony Sevener does some drum machine programming here and there. Not surprisingly, the record is very relaxed and restrained. Davenport's love of classic rock seems to have been boiled down to an affection for soft rock groups like Bread and America and singer/songwriters like Henry Gross, Leo Sayer, and James Taylor. The acoustic tunes definitely call this era to mind, especially the vocal harmony-rich opener "Welcome to the Show" and the JT-channeling "Paper Friend." The songs that are fleshed out with more instruments ("One Reason" with its slinky rhythm, processed guitar sounds, and cheesy synths; "Into Music" with a rinky-dink drum machine, jazzy guitar chords, and Sweet Baby James vocals; and "Clara," which sails along nicely with a bossa and Belle & Sebastian feel until it is derailed by an ill-advised bout of scatting) are no less '70s-sounding and wouldn't seem out of place on Frampton's I'm in You. At its best on the bopping "Finishing School" and "LA Girls," the album comes close to the exciting sound Davenport had on his last record; however, the rest of the time the album feels like a step back and away from the near brilliance of Game Preserve. In fact, Maroon Cocoon feels half finished, like a batch of demos for a great record. ~ Tim Sendra

Maroon Cocoon songs
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with ...

Maroon Cocoon album
$14.45 From folksinger to clinical psychologist and back to folksinger, Kaplansky has experienced life, and proves you can have it all. One of the themes of this disc is the Chinese child she and her husband have adopted, and the way being a parent will change her and her relationships, explored lovingly on "I Had Something" and the title track. But she's also looking outside herself, concerned with the world, and out of that comes one of the most insightful post- 9/11 songs, "Land of the Living," which focuses on humans, not theories and abstractions. "Line in the Sand," about Iraq, doesn't work as well, however, and "Brooklyn Train" ends up being reminiscent of For the Roses-era Joni Mitchell. Kaplansky has always offered a wide range of covers on her albums, and this follows the pattern, from the heartbreaking "Cowboy Singer" by the late Dave Carter to a rocked-up "Off and Running" from the pen of James McMurtry. As usual, she's supported by her longtime bandmates, who often supply glistening arrangements to frame ...
| | Seether Disclaimer II CD (2002) Bonus DVD; Deluxe Edition
Maroon Cocoon CD music
$8.99 A cursory listen to DISCLAIMER reveals a debt to such U.S. heavy rock bands as Papa Roach and Drowning Pool, no great shock since Seether producer Jay Baumgardner had previously worked with both of those bands. The surprising part is that this very American-sounding nu-metal band actually comes from South Africa. Their homeland is where the Dave Matthews Band comparisons abruptly end, though. Seether goes for the time-tested power-trio format that's served hard-hitting rock bands in good stead throughout the decades, from Mountain to Nirvana. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Shaun Morgan is at the heart of the group's sound, his angst-ridden lyrics and emotive delivery occasionally suggesting the influence of the aforementioned Kurt Cobain-fronted band. Grunge flavoring to the contrary, though, this is a solidly contemporary band whose sheer sonic force puts them directly in the forefront of circa-2002 heavy rock.
