| | Sarah Dylan CD (2008)
Tidal/When The Pawn
$7.99 Sarah Dylan was born in 1991 in Toronto, Canada. Before she reached the age of two, her parents discovered her musical talent. By the age of six, she began taking piano lessons and writing her own short compositions. At age seven, Sarah had already won her camp talent show and various other talent contests. Not only does she sing, but she has had lead roles in many musical theatre productions; Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, and most recently Fame, to name a few. After studying piano and taking vocal lessons for six years, she decided that she wanted to learn another instrument. At her school, she learned how to play the viola. This proved challenging at first, but by the time she was thirteen, she was part of an orchestra that placed second in Kiwanis Festival. She also was part of the Toronto Youth Orchestra, which is extremely difficult to get into. Throughout her grade nine year, she recorded music every other week with the Juno Award Winning producer Greg Kavagnah. At this point she had been studying the guitar, and had twenty songs that she had written since she was twelve. She was able to finish her first self-titled demo within the year. She still continues to write music about many topics ranging from personal relationships, independence, and many other issues that are faced by any sixteen year old woman. In addition to music, she also excels in school. Her favourite subjects are math and science. She is a very ...

| | Supraliminal Vol. 3-Most Likely To Be Famous CD (2008)
Tidal/When The Pawn
$13.15 Danny Smith was born August 6, 1987, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Growing up in the neighboring town of Somerville and attending school nearby, he made known early on that he would express himself at will and in his own light. Full of emotion, he spent day to day creating artwork of all genres, most often writing stories of fantastical struggles and bloody illustrations to match; the villain always ended victorious. Part of this powerful energy constantly steered Danny towards mischief, an obstacle a grade school teacher once described as “what will make him the youngest leader of the mafia ever, if something cannot channel it differently.” Around this time Danny picked up his first drum set, playing for a handful of years alongside a decade-long development of piano skills. Through his early years, Danny built a diverse foundation for meaningful artistic expression that would eventually produce the unique, east coast sound of Supraliminal.Danny’s years in Boston Public middle and high schools followed to usher in an eclectic medley of late nights, weed smoke, beer bottles, first love, great depression, impressive grades, aggressive mindset, graffiti obsession, and Rahzel valuation. The latter three predominantly propelled Smith through his transition to hip hop culture. Days upon months were spent imitating, practicing and polishing Rahzel’s difficult beatboxing routines, earning him a striking talent that could not go unnoticed, and the title of ‘DJ Mini’ to accompany it. Supplying the daily after-school freestyle circles with instrumentals, Danny came to realize that spitting rhymes was both exciting and therapeutic; he first connected with fellow student emcees Messiah and Static (the younger brother of Boston’s award-winning producer WMS The Sultan), practicing freestyling and verbal skills by rapping through text of classics like The Iliad and others. While venturing into writing his first rap songs, Danny met Somerville’s ...
| | Barry Manilow In The Swing Of Christmas CD (2007)
Tidal/When The Pawn
$11.29 Since Manilow released his previous delightful holiday album A Christmas Gift of Love in 2002, the legendary singer and entertainer became a Las Vegas staple and experienced a pop chart renaissance with his collections of greatest songs of the '50s, '60s, and '70s. True to its title, his engaging third Christmas CD is more swinging and jazzy than his other two, which had an interesting musical variety but were definitely more pop. Since his '70s heyday, the singer has done everything from brilliant jazz, big-band, and show tune projects to a fanciful Sinatra tribute, and here he creates unforgettable arrangements of many familiar songs that draw from all of these genres. Texturing his own voice, he creates a Take 6-flavored twist on "Silver Bells," then on "Jingle Bells," mixes a hard-driving jazz trio and '40s big-band-flavored approach with a touch of the whimsy of Barbra Streisand's famous version. His MaD Fusion trio featuring the wild piano improvisations of Matt Herskowitz adds inspired energy to a medley of two songs we've heard a million times but rarely as entertainingly, "Joy to the World"/"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." Beyond enjoying Manilow's mix of unique jazzy vocal approaches with tender straightforward deliveries (as on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,"), what makes this perhaps his best Christmas disc are a few unexpected song choices: the beautiful "Violets for Your Furs" (best known as a song on Frank Sinatra's legendary 1954 album Songs for Young Lovers); the easy swinging, brass-inflected "Toyland," from Victor Herbert's operetta Babes in Toyland, and "Count Your Blessings," the "other song" Irving Berlin wrote for the film White Christmas. Fans of Manilow and Christmas music would pick up this disc even if it was average and prosaic, but the obvious love the artist put into these fresh choices and arrangements makes it one of his most unique and inspired efforts ever. ~ Jonathan Widran
