| | Minor Threat Complete Discography CD (1988)
Brotherhood
$10.65 The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and song dynamics vary more than on the earlier record. On certain songs, Ian MacKaye's lyrics address the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and self-expression. "Look Back and Laugh," "Little Friend," and "It Follows" all incline more toward introspection and ambiguity; conveying loss and sadness in addition to outrage. This second set of songs seems to especially anticipate MacKaye's ...

| | Mars Volta Frances The Mute CD (2005)
Brotherhood
$11.49 FRANCES THE MUTE, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Mars Volta's stunning debut, DE-LOUSED IN THE COMATORIUM, finds the band's masterminds, Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (both formerly of At the Drive-In), diving further into their bizarre, unique sonic aesthetic. Here various forms of Latin music merge with ambient passages, jazzy interludes, and fierce progressive rock. The Latin influence, in fact, is more evident than ever, with Bixler Zavala often alternating between Spanish and English lyrics, and full-on salsa sections providing a melodic respite from the energetic chaos (particularly on "L'Via L'Viaquez," which features pianist Larry Harlow). Despite the complexity of FRANCES THE MUTE's suite-like song structures, the tracks form a fascinating whole, never losing focus of the group's key elements--Bixler Zavala's stunningly expressive vocals and Rodriguez-Lopez's amazingly proficient guitar heroics. A challenging and fascinating album, FRANCES THE MUTE reinforces the Mars Volta's reputation as a bold, iconoclastic band.

| | Vince Guaraldi Boy Named Charlie Brown CD (1964)
Brotherhood
$10.99 Along with the PEANUTS comic strip, the Charlie Brown CBS television specials continue to enrich the lives of all who view them. Without a doubt, pianist Vince Guaraldi's score has been a vital part of that cartoon's success.
A BOY NAMED CHARLIE BROWN is classic West Coast cool jazz, undoubtedly some of the most famous music of its kind. After all, who doesn't know the "Charlie Brown Theme?" This soundtrack will bring back memories you may have of the television show, as well as your own recollections from childhood. It's also a good starting place for non-jazz fans to get acquainted with this art form. A BOY NAMED CHARLIE BROWN is very accessible music, even though the piano is charmingly out of tune; ...

| | Mana Suenos Liquidos CD (1997)
Brotherhood
$8.25 SUENOS LIQUIDOS won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Latin/Rock Alternative Performance.
As trippy and loose-limbed as the album art may be (echoes of Santana's ABRAXAS), SUENOS LIQUIDOS finds these rockeros Mexicanos creating an ever-more refined sound. It's a free-and-easy rock & roll that's been baked in the Yucatan sun, with all the fun of Bryan Adams, the drive of the Police and an unflinching love of the ballad. With a nylon-string guitar fill here or a harmonized vocal fadeout there, frontman Fher and drummer Alex Gonzalez display an impeccable production sense, enhancing the mood while keeping the mix clear and each instrument distinct.
Fher's gone and caught gypsy fever, with his dreamy, dust-throated crooning about a mermaid enchantress on "Hechicera." Lead guitarist Sergio Vallin provides fine shredding over the song's reggae-rock beat, a familiar Mana sound. "Un Lobo" and "Clavado" are pure chunky-riff fun, songs about the highs and lows of being lost in love. And who could resist all those sweet chorus harmonies? These chicos may be getting a little older, but their music is still full of life, y en Espanol como siempre.
