Kazu Matsui's THE STONE MONKEY is an entrancing album that features ethereal keyboard washes, hypnotic drum loops, and throbbing bass riffs. However, Matsui's shakuhachi (a traditional Japanese bamboo flute) is the album's centerpiece.
The reedy sound of the shakuhachi gives tracks such as "Shadow of Its Soul" and "Red Forest" a dark, rueful feel. Other selections, such as the album's opening, "Edge of Sunrise," and the title track, "The Stone Monkey" are buoyant, airy and sunny. On these pieces, Matsui offers a picture of serenity and stillness, as if one is observing the sun rising. But with every awakening, there is also a descent into night. The penultimate track on this release, "Eye of the Moon," signals the album's twilight and the last piece "Crow" revels in nocturnal flights of fancy. Matsui's greatest talent is his ability to take the listener on a musical journey from light to dark, energetic to sleepy. These contrasts, coupled with Matsui's unerring sense of melodicism, make THE STONE MONKEY a very memorable listen.

$12.59 Patrick O'Hearn is refreshingly difficult to classify. His electronic work leans decidedly towards an ambient sound, but the Latin and Caribbean-style acoustic beats on songs such as "Facing the Sun" imply a strong world element. ...

Stone Monkey CD music
$10.49 On 2005's CHRISTMAS SONGS, Diana Krall applies her sultry vocals and nuanced piano lines to a strong set of holiday classics. | | Frank Sinatra Portrait Of Sinatra: Columbia Classics CDs (1997)
Stone Monkey music CDs
$15.99 Recorded between August 31, 1939 and March 27, 1951. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.
While some prefer the Sinatra of the Capitol era, citing that work as more elegant and artful, the recordings Frank made for Columbia in the 1940s and early '50s are just as important. They represent a different phase in Sinatra's evolution, but are no less striking in their emotional impact. While Axel Stordahl, Sinatra's chief arranger at Columbia, may not have been the modernist/minimalist that Nelson Riddle would become in the latter's Capitol work, Stordahl was as sympathetic a collaborator as Sinatra had encountered to that point.
The swing numbers, saloon songs, and pure pop presented on the two-disc PORTRAIT OF SINATRA: COLUMBIA CLASSICS display as great a range of emotions as can be found in any Sinatra Capitol/Reprise anthology. ...
| | Oscar Peterson Plays The Duke Ellington Songbook CD (1999)
Stone Monkey songs
$12.05 Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios).
Twice in the 1950s, pianist Oscar Peterson recorded an extensive series of songbooks devoted to one composer. From 1952-53, Peterson, guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Brown were extensively documented; in 1959, the pianist joined up with Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen to repeat many of the programs (since the group had changed and the music could now be cut in stereo) plus additional songbooks. This 1999 CD brings together both of Peterson's Duke Ellington tributes; the same dozen songs were recorded with each of the two groups. The Duke Ellington-associated material -- which includes two songs by Mercer Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's "Take the 'A' Train" -- mostly consist of familiar songs, except for Mercer Ellington's "John Hardy's Wife." While the earlier session has a fair amount of variety in tempo and mood, with Kessel offering a competing and complementary solo voice to the pianist, the 1959 album was obviously put together very quickly during a two-month period when Peterson was being recorded ...
| | Bluebird's Best: Bigband Swingin' Through The Night CD (2002) Remastered
Stone Monkey album
$7.69 The terms "swing era" and "big-band era" are often used interchangeably, which makes sense because swing and big bands have often gone together -- often, but not always. During jazz's pre-bebop years, there were plenty of small groups that played swing. And after World War II, bop had the occasional big band. Assembled by Bluebird/RCA in 2002, Big Band: Swingin' Through the Night is primarily a compilation of big-band swing. The CD spans 1933-1954, and about 80 percent of these big bands embrace swing. The oldest track is Cab Calloway's 1933 smash "Minnie the Moocher," and the most recent is the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra's 1954 recording "The Loop." Although swing is dominant, "The Loop" and Dizzy Gillespie's 1947 recording of Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait" are perfect examples of big bands playing bop. Overall, the material is excellent -- gems by Benny Goodman ("King Porter Stomp"), Duke Ellington ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore"), and Glenn Miller ("Little Brown Jug") are swing heaven. But regrettably, a number of other things bring the disc's rating ...

| | Parkway Drive Killing With A Smile CD (2006)
Stone Monkey album
$12.95 Like their peers I Killed the Prom Queen, Australia's Parkway Drive have read up on the metalcore handbook as written by popular American bands like Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying. Their debut, Killing with a Smile, is all about punishing breakdowns, death metal riffing, hardcore aggression, and monstrous growls that want nothing more than to spit and snarl until listeners entirely understand just how pissed off they really are and, well, that they're not joking. Outside of a rough and venomous exterior (and incessant use of murderous and bloody imagery), Parkway Drive prove to really be just a bunch of tough Aussies with broken hearts. Of course, though, this means malicious and infuriated revenge directed at the young maidens who have tossed them aside. ...
