Just as Chris Brann followed up his debut album, Release, with a remix collection, Re-Release, he followed up his second album, Morning Light, with Relight, a seamlessly mixed collection of remixes from that album that comes with an accompanying bonus disc of yet more remixes, these dating from between 1998 and 2005. All of this amounts to a whopping 22 tracks of Ananda Project, almost of all of which, amazingly, are on a par with Brann's standard output, if more inclined toward dancefloor play. For that reason, those who prefer his up-tempo house work over his more chilled-out album-listening work will savor the first disc of Relight, as it plays like a standard DJ mix, albeit one of nothing but Ananda Project tracks and one that lets the tracks play out to near-end before a quick fade (that is, DJ mixing that emphasizes the tracks, not the mixing itself). A few of the tracks are previously unreleased, including the back-to-back run of "Wasting My Love" and "Everything You Are (Atlanta Rising)," which gets the mix going in high gear early on and gives Relight some distinction from its source album. Moreover, a few of the tracks on the first disc are outsourced mixes, by Gabriel Rene (as Aquanote), DJ Spinna, and Eric Kupper, though these producers don't depart too far from the Ananda Project style. The second disc is likewise mixed DJ-style, and is a bit more eclectic. A couple of the mixes here are previously unreleased, and a good half of them appeared in their original versions on Release. Outsourced remixers here include Richard Morel, Wally Lopez, and Kyoto Jazz Massive. While a great many of these sort of dance remix albums are tedious cash-in efforts that appeal mainly to disciples and completists, Relight is an exception to the norm -- one that is just as enjoyable as its source, if not more so, given its dancefloor emphasis -- just as Brann's consistently excellent output is exceptional among his innumerable house peers. ~ Jason Birchmeier

With the release of Ananda Project Relight, rediscover and revisit classic songs from the groups heralded sophomore full-length Morning Light. The continuously mixed Relight is designed to arouse the senses in any setting. The 13-song set features 5 exclusive Relight re-rubs from Brann, alongside 4 new recordings and crate essential remixes (of select Morning Light singles) from Eric Kupper (the top selling single, Kiss Kiss Kiss), DJ Spinna (ICU) and Aquanote aka Gabriel Rene of Soulstice (Justice, Mercy). It also includes the bonus G-Pal New York Mix of Falling For You (from the groups classic debut Release).

This release contains a bonus disc.

5 stars Doesn't Disappoint
Ananda Project serves up yet another album of deep grooves and pounding house beats. With each release it gets better and this one is on the top of them all.

5 stars another stunning collection....
I am really beginning to think that Chris Brann can do no wrong. This man has obviously got the whole house feeling down pat,for real. This is another booty-shaking release you have got to own!!! There are a couple of unreleased tracks too which are definately worth checkin' out. All in all, the formula he has created between all the Ananda/ Wamdue/ Brann productions are among the most important in house music history. Love on..........

Champaign IV CD  (1991)

CD $14.49  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Champaign had huge hits with 1981's "How About Us" and 1983's "Try Again," but by the late 1980s, the Illinois group was struggling. So Champaign turned to the same Jackson, MS-based label that had been a refuge for Johnnie Taylor, Denise LaSalle, Latimore and other soul veterans: Malaco. In 1990, Champaign signed with Malaco and recorded IV, its first album since 1984's Woman In Flames. Lead singer Pauli Carman had been recording as a solo artist, and returned to the band for this decent but not earth-shattering release. Instead ...
Songs For Grownups
Dean Friedman Songs For Grownups CDs  (1999)

Relight
CD $21.49
Dean Friedman first marked his entry into pop consciousness with the Top 20 chart success of his infectious hit single, Ariel, a quirkily irresistible and uncategorizable pop song about a free spirited, music loving, vegetarian Jewish girl in a peasant blouse who lived, as the lyric goes, "...way on the other side of the Hudson". Friedman scored again with the release of his follow up album, “Well, Well,” Said the Rocking Chair’, and the now classic hit single, Lucky Stars. This magical duet, performed with singer, Denise Marsa, zoomed to the top of the UK singles charts, going instantly gold. Lucky Stars paved the way for a slew of Friedman hits in the UK, including familiar radio staples such as Lydia, Rocking Chair and Woman of Mine. Friedman’s consummate songwriting and performing, have earned him a loyal international following, devoted to the sophisticated, funny and profound work of a master songsmith. “Stunning Musicianship” - Hot Press, "Songsmith Extraordinaire! A Great Performer!" - Music Week , "An Amazing Talent" - The Sun, "An American Classic" - Tribune, are just of few of the superlatives used to describe Friedman's powerfully unique and original talent.Friedman’s recent run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival garnered similar critical praise: “Every song in this Edinburgh show is a classic. You won't see a better show.” – London Theatre Guide. "Sophisticated and humorous work from an old master!" Scotland on Sunday / Festival Critic's Music Choice. “With his mix of jaunty ditties, sentimental ballads and bashful charm, Friedman is the pop troubadour of choice.” The Scotsman.Although Friedman’s next single, McDonald's Girl was officially banned by the BBC for mentioning the tradename of the fast food restaurant in its chorus, the irrepressible pop song has been successfully covered by a number of acclaimed contemporary bands including the Canadian group Barenaked Ladies [WEA]. (BNL member, Steve Page, sings background vocals on Dean’s recent double album.) Friedman has also composed and produced music soundtracks for TV and film, including five seasons of Central TV's hit series BOON and the soundtrack to the underground cult horror film classic I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle [Hobo Films/U.K.]. Despite Friedman's apparent absence from the popular music scene, evidence that his name and music have made a lasting impact on pop music can be found in repeated appearances in popular media: The British band Half Man Half Biscuit released a best selling EP containing the incredibly titled, The Bastard Son of Dean Friedman. (Dean emphatically denies this claim.) With his influence evident in the music of contemporary bands like Barenaked Ladies, the Blenders and Ben Folds Five, Friedman states, ‘It’s nice to see that my music has made an impact on a new generation of artists.’Friedman’s double CD, ‘Songs for Grownups’ has been hailed as a modern classic and his latest CD, ‘Squirrels in the Attic’ – comedy songs for adults, ...
Tell The Truth
Otis Redding Tell The Truth CD  (1970) Import

Relight
CD $15.15
When a major artist dies, labels can usually be counted on to release anything and everything the artist had in the can, regardless of quality. In the case of Otis Redding, most of the posthumous releases were of a very high quality. One example is Tell the Truth, which was recorded the year he died, 1967, and remained unreleased until 1970. Though it falls short of essential, ...
20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Grace Jones
20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Grace Jones CD  (2003)

Relight
CD $7.05  2.5 stars Audio Samples
Recorded between 1977 & 1982. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. Basically, this Grace Jones entry in the Millennium Collection series is a one-disc version of Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions with "La Vie en Rose" added as representation of her early disco years. The Compass Point years were great, with Sly & Robbie providing the groovy reggae backbeat and Jones supplying the European iciness. The cosmopolitan and paranoid versions of Roxy Music's "Love Is the Drug," the Normal's "Warm Leatherette," and the Pretenders' "Private Life" are all excellent. Although the collection somehow leaves off her signature tune, "Slave to the Rhythm," the tunes written by Grace and friends are just as good, especially the widely sampled "My Jamaican Guy." If the compilers had included the few good singles from Jones' post-Island period it would have made the collection all the more valuable, but there's still a lot of great music here. ~ David Jeffries Any Grace Jones fan can quickly see that her Millennium Collection was slapped together with little care for telling her story. Sad really, since no compilation has ever captured the whole career of the underrated artist well. Basically, it's a one-disc version of Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions with "La Vie en Rose" tacked on as the only representation of her early disco years. The Compass Point years were great, with Sly & Robbie providing the groovy reggae backbeat and Jones supplying the European iciness. The cosmopolitan and paranoid versions of Roxy ...

Funk: The Essential Album
Funk: The Essential Album CDs  (2006)

Relight
CD $16.19
It's natural to look at a collection calling itself "the essential" anything and want to stump the compiler. So a perusal of Funk: The Essential Album is warranted to see if any major funkateers were skipped over. James Brown? Got him. Got Maceo Parker and the J.B.'s, too -- even Bobby Byrd. Funkadelic? Check. (No Parliament, but they were the same band.) Ohio Players, Curtis Mayfield, Kool & the Gang, Sly & the Family Stone? All accounted for. Yup, the Meters, too. You can take a few points off for the omission of Rick James, the Gap Band, Tower of Power, and a handful of others, but for a two-disc overview of a genre as monumental as funk -- which dominated commercial black dance music from the late '60s to the rise of disco in the mid-'70s -- Funk: The Essential Album lives up to its promise. Intentionally or not, the first disc is top-loaded with a heavier concentration of hits. For a quick primer course on ...

Things I Failed To Mention
Michael Logen Things I Failed To Mention CD  (2007)

Relight
CD $12.55
“I believe, at the end of the day, we’re all artists”, says newcomer, indie-rocker Michael Logen. “The question is whether we’ll embrace it every day or run screaming from it. The beauty is the fun and danger of sharing it."Blending elements of pop, folk and rock, Michael wrote, arranged, played on and co-produced his long-awaited debut album, "Things I Failed To Mention". Much of the album was written while backpacking through Europe with a guitar and notebook.Michael is joined on this album by co-producers Joe West (Emmy Lou Harris, Jewel, Justin Timberlake) and Chris Farren (Dave Matthews, Johnny Cash) with a guest appearance by recording artist Jill Phillips. If you like happy-go-lucky dittys that tie things together neatly by the end of the song, then this album is not for you. But if you're looking for a moody intensity that erupts into a pure and powerful line at a moment’s notice, songs dark and beautiful, this may be the album you've been waiting for. Though Michael has a home in Nashville, he spends so much time traveling the US and Europe that his true home arguably consists of a suitcase, a guitar and a hotel room. Whether touring with a full band or playing solo, Michael’s emotive live show and captivating stage presence are holding fans spell-bound around the globe and ...
