There's little question that Shout! Factory's double-disc compilation The Marshall Tucker Band Anthology: The First 30 Years is exhuastive. It spans 32 songs, sampling from 20 albums, running more or less in chronological order, and giving a good idea of the group's narrative. While that's a lot of ground, some charting singles are still missing -- 1975's "This Ol' Cowboy," 1978's "Dream Lover," 1980's "It Takes Time," 1983's "A Place I've Never Been," 1987's "Hangin' Out in Smoky Places," and 1993's "Walk Outside of the Lines" are all absent, which is kind of puzzling for a collection of this size, and will certainly be frustrating for listeners who know of MTB primarily from the radio. That said, for the serious fan who wants a thorough overview this is still a pretty good choice, since it does illustrate the arc of the group's career. For less dedicated fans, this will be a bit too much Marshall Tucker Band, and they may be better sticking with the group's definitive eponymous debut, since there is no good single-disc hits compilation on the market. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

8:05, if I could only have my way, I may be easy but you make it hard, feel a drunk coming on, bags half packed and a few other good songs to fill the set up. Put out a 2cd set with the same 27 songs as were on the 2cd capricorn best cd set it has almost all they best songs from that era short about 4 great songs. This was a great band very underrated shout could make a lot of new fans for MTB if they did this. Or put out a box set of 4 cds of they're first 13 records the first ten years. Take The Highway I saw The Marshall Tucker Band at an outdoor concert in July 1977. The Anthology is great. Marshall Tucker lets you know what you're in for from the opening track 'Take The Highway'. It's a great sampler of the music and instuments yet to come on the rest of the album. Submitted by sydney (Belfast) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Anthology: The First 30 Years
$28.15 MODERN TIMES was the second Jefferson Starship forged under the creative auspices of Mickey Thomas and also reintroduced Grace Slick to the band. The combination spawned the rock hit "Find Your Way Back" and radical "Stairway to Cleveland."
This second edition of the Mickey Thomas-era Jefferson Starship/Starship polished '80s rock is actually a weird hybrid which you could call psychedelic metal. For fans of the fragments that were Sunfighter, Baron von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun, Manhole, and other experimental Airplane offshoots, this material is much too mainstream for its own good. But it isn't the eminently dislikable Mickey Thomas who is the major culprit as much as it is producer/engineer Ron Nevison, whose homogenization of records from Ozzy Osborne to Heart displayed a glaring lack of creativity, inspiration, or sense of anything remotely resembling art. Yes, Marty Balin actually practiced "Jane" with the group prior to his leaving the Freedom at Point Zero sessions, and had he stayed onboard, the approach may have been a more progressive folk-rock. It was Larry Cox who engineered from Dragon Fly to Spitfire, co-producing the music with the very capable band. Minus Balin and Cox, the true evolution of the Airplane sound is mutated and muffled on Modern Times. Critic William Ruhlmann noted that "Stairway to Cleveland" is "as gutsy a statement of purpose as any in rock," but that tune and the title track, two ofPaul Kantner's three contributions, are the only ones with elements that stay true to the band's original mission. "Stairway to Cleveland" ...
