Ich Darf Das
$15.19 Charlie Poole (1892-1931) was a hard-living, plain-singing, banjo-picking raconteur, amateur baseball player, mill worker, boozer, and bootlegger whose name may not be as well known as, say, Jimmie Rodgers or the Carter Family, but who nonetheless helped define what country music later became. Loudon Wainwright built this album around both old songs associated with Poole and new ones that help move the Poole story forward for today's world. Poole was not primarily a songwriter; he took what he heard elsewhere and bent it to his will. But he had an inimitable populist style, a whole lot of attitude and charisma, and the kind of sly humor that a sly humorist like Wainwright certainly can embrace. Of the 30 tracks spread across these two discs, all but nine were found among Poole's own, relatively small catalog. Without attempting to replicate the acoustic string band sound of the '20s and early '30s, Wainwright gets to the heart of songs such as "I'm the Man Who Rode the Mule Around the World," "Moving Day" (with the Roches on background vocals), "The Letter That Never Came," and "Mother's Last Farewell Kiss," tunes that Poole waxed and which, in the hands of Wainwright, manage to open a window into the Depression-era life while remaining viable to contemporary ears. Loudon's new songs are intended not so much to conform to Poole's style (although they do that, too) as to embellish upon it.

| | Essential Weird Al Yankovic CDs (2009)
Ich Darf Das
$15.89 More times than not, Columbia/Legacy's Essential collections are stellar overviews. Boasting a two-and-a-half-hour running time and 38 songs hand-picked by Al himself, THE ESSENTIAL "WEIRD AL" YANKVIC is yet another well-executed title in the series. Encompassing 12 albums, the double-disc set starts from the beginning of Al's career, with "Another One Rides the Bus," his live "Another One Bites the Dust" parody from the Dr. Demento show in 1980, and it gradually chronicles up to the R. Kelly-influenced "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" from 2006's STRAIGHT OUTA LYNWOOD. Most of Al's big parodies are highlighted here ("Eat It," "I Lost on Jeopardy," "Yoda," "Like a Surgeon," "Fat") -- as well as some choice deep cuts, like the ripping accordion medley "Polkas on 45," the opening theme from UHF, and a smattering of absurd originals ("Albuquerque," "Dare to Be Stupid," "You Don't Love Me Anymore," and "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota"). All of these could be deemed essential for fans, but nitpickers will wonder about the whereabouts of "Ricky," "Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies," and two of Yankovic's best food parodies, "My Bologna" and "I Love Rocky Road." These songs aside, not much is missing, considering the depth of his discography. The exhaustive four-disc PERMANENT RECORD has 50 songs, but it stops at 1994. Al may have hit a rocky patch for a spell toward the turn of the millennium, but he had some ...

| | Del Close How To Speak Hip: Now Featuring The Do It Yourself Psychoanalysis Kit CD (2009) Remastered
Ich Darf Das
$14.65 Del Close is an unsung hero of American comedy; in the 1950s, he was one of the early members of the St. Louis branch of the Compass Players, a theater troupe that would relocate from St. Louis to Chicago and in time change its name to the Second City, and after a few years in New York City, he returned to Chicago and SECOND CITY, becoming a cast member, and later director, and mentor to many. 1959's HOW TO SPEAK HIP teamed him with fellow comic John Brent, who plays brain-cloudy beatnik Geets Romo to Close's (relative) straight man as the two converse about the finer points of hipster speech patterns while instructing the listener on how to embrace the language of cool. Fans of classic comedy albums will certainly want to pick this up, and anyone with a weakness for the thinking person's cultural phenomena of the '50s will, like, dig it.
Del Close was an influential improvisational theatre figurehead, comic mentor, teacher and sometime actor. These two fantastic spoken word albums, one for Mercury (“…Hip”, recorded with John Brent in 1958) and the other for the little known Hanover label. Very much both of their time and timeless, these brilliant discs both ...
