Sweet originally began as a pre-packaged pop outfit for the producers/songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. By combining the crunch of hard rock with the hooks of bubblegum pop, the pair provided Sweet with its first handful of mindlessly effective hits in the early glam soaked '70s, notably "Little Willy," "Blockbuster," "Wig Wam Bam," and "Ball Room Blitz." Underneath this teen-pop glitz however, a real rock and roll band was smoldering. Determined to make its own statement and get out from under the Chinn-Chapman control center, the band took a leap of faith and cut DESOLATION BOULEVARD completely on its own.
What is surprising is not so much the band's desire for independence but that Sweet succeeded on all fronts with this release. Keeping the power hooks intact, the band displays its own knack for songwriting. DESOLATION BOULEVARD contains the band's biggest single, "Fox on the Run," a telling rocker featuring the band's multi-octave vocals. The other highlight on the album is the softer "The 6-Teens," which harkens back to the band's pop formula with considerably more texture than the their earlier hits.

They have the american release tracks listed. This cd only has 4 of the tracks listed (The Six Teens, Solid Gold Brass, Fox On The Run & I Wanna Be Committed). Missing Ballroom Blitz & six others listed!! Disappointment in my book. Grew up with the U.S. version and thought I was Getting it remastered.

I really love this cd especially the song Turn It Down , it really really rocks. The version of fox on the run that Im used to hearing , the 7in version I like that and I also like the other version of fox on the run. I just recently became a sweet fan and I love their music from the bubblegum stuff, to the glam rock, to the heavy stuff, I just love it.

the song selection was not as great as sweet fanny adams. the 1999 release of this album. some songs, i thought needed to be improved. in the 2005 release it had. way lot better sound. even the original fox on the run (7" version) that was on the usa cd. is on here. this time i had to give it 5 stars for restoring this cd. the way it was meant to sound. the picture disc is not on this release. as of the 1999.

After the international success of the self-produced "Fox on the Run," Sweet broke away from songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman in an attempt to shake their "pop puppets" and took a stab at conquering the hard rock album market. Sadly, a lot of their post-hit singles period output lacked the tight songwriting and hooks that made them famous, and this problem is in evidence on Off the Record. The band's musical approach seems schizophrenic on this album: songs like "Windy City" and "Live for Today" attempt a tough sound built on gritty lyrics and heavy guitar riffs, but this approach is undone by the overt slickness of the production, ...
