A key element of the late-1970s/early-'80s UK ska revival, the English Beat nevertheless always had more pop smarts and a wider stylistic palette than compatriots like the Specials and the Selecter. As BEAT THIS! THE BEST OF THE ENGLISH BEAT makes clear, ska wound up being just one color in ...
| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Seventies Album CD music
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full ...

$12.09 Recorded between 1969 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Mike Ragogna & Dana Smart.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (1999, MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
Not a career-spanning overview, as opening number "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" dates from 1969, seven years into Jimmy Cliff's career, but this is an excellent trawl through his past nonetheless. Ultimate Collection should really have kicked off with "Waterfall," his first international hit (number one in Brazil), but "World" brought him success in the both in the U.K. and U.S., and apparently that's all that counts. Nevertheless, the set follows the reggae star down the years, through hit singles and across crucial album tracks, and bringing it all bang up to date with "Rise Up," a number from Cliff's 1999 Humanitarian album. However, there's one yawning gap -- 1982 to 1988, ...
| | Peter Tosh Mama Africa CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Seventies Album album
$8.85 Released nearly five years before his violent death at the hands of thieves in 1987, MAMA AFRICA was the last studio album of new material released in Peter Tosh's lifetime. From his days as one of the original Wailers in the '60s, Tosh was one of Jamaican music's most outspoken and controversial artists. Though his former partner Bob Marley never shied away from political or social statements himself, Tosh eschewed Marley's gift for metaphor and parable in favor of such explicitly political slogans as the legendary "Legalize It."
MAMA AFRICA features the similarly plainspoken anti-nuclear "Peace Treaty," complete with falling-bombs sound effects. The single, a reggae remake of "Johnny B. Goode," was a radio success. While it might seem on the surface ...

Seventies Album music CDs
$8.99 Principally recorded at Rock Land Studios, Chicago, Illinois.
"I Wish" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Few people have ever bought an R. Kelly record for its sophisticated lyrical innuendo, and on TP-2.COM Kelly offers more of the unabashedly carnal mack-daddy R&B that made him a pinup in the '90s. It's clear from the outset that Kelly means business, as the opening tune finds him declaring that he's "horny as hell" and "it's about to get kinky."
Over the sensual slow jam of "Strip for You," ...

Seventies Album songs
$11.35 David Fricke of Rolling Stone called My Education's sound "advanced ecstasy" and announced the band as his "surprise find" at SXSW 2005, but plenty of fans from central Texas and all around the globe already knew that My Education are better than drugs: the pulse-pounding emotion of their visceral live shows and the lyrical beauty and dark grandeur of their recorded output had heralded this from the get-go. Formed in Austin in 1999 by Brian Purington, Eric Gibbons and Sean Seagler, three refugees from San Angelo, TX, the band flirted briefly with the idea of vocals but soon decided they were never necessary to begin with and became a purely instrumental outfit. With the addition of keyboardist Kirk Laktas (Stars of the Lid, Ultrasound, etc.), viola virtuoso James Alexander (Cinders, ecfa) and Floridian transplant guitar god Chris Hackstie, the lineup stabilized and their first album 5 Popes was recorded at the Bubble with Chris "Frenchie" Smith (16 Deluxe, Young Heart Attack) at the helm. The self-released record peaked at number one on many college radio stations across North America. The band has toured Midwest, East Coast, and Canada multiple times since the original release of 5 Popes along w/ showcasing @ SXSW 2003-2006. The first ...

Seventies Album CD music
$13.15 “THE SOUND…STUNNING, THE WORDS…SPECTACULAR” “RISER’S VOCALS, WRITTEN AND SUNG ARE FANTASTIC”“IT’S FRESH...A CD THAT IS GREAT FROM START TO FINISH”Catherine L. TullyIndie-Music.comSupported by music that is powerful and haunting, the melodies and topics of Michael Riser’s songs cut deeper than the usual clichés, touch on the common threads of emotion we all share, and reflect the multi-dimensional depth of a life filled with experience.“I’ve done a lot of things and lived a lot of lives in a short time”, the singer explains, “and I think those experiences helped me to gain some different perspectives, which I don’t hide from in my music. I take pride in being honest with myself, and I hope that kind of honesty is felt through my writing”.And like Michael Riser’s topics, many of his songs and melodies also reflect a strong crossover appeal, and are equally at home with Rock, Country or Adult Contemporary audiences. With musical and lyrical moods ranging from volcanic songs like the passionate “While I’m Gone”, in which he blends intense vocal and instrumental aggression with a fiery squadron of flamenco styled gypsy cellos, to his growling power ballad, “Real Love”, with its lyrics conveying forgiving appreciation of the desperate ...
