Personnel: David "Fathead" Newman (flute, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); David "Fathead" Newman ; Bennie Hank Crawford, Bennie Crawford (baritone saxophone); Edgar Willis (double bass); Milton Turner, Milt Turner, Milton Turner (drums); Marcus Belgrave (trumpet); Ray Charles (piano). Liner Note Authors: David Ritz; Gary Kramer; Joel Dorn. Recording information: Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, NY (11/05/1958). The talented David Newman, who alternates on this album between tenor and alto, made his debut as a leader at this session. Since he was in Ray Charles' band at the time, Newman was able to use Charles on piano along with Hank Crawford (here called "Bennie Crawford") on baritone, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, bassist Edgar Willis, and drummer Milt Turner. The music is essentially soulful bebop, with the highlights including "Hard Times," "Fathead," "Mean to Me," and "Tin Tin Deo." Everyone plays well and this was a fine start to David "Fathead" Newman's career. This historic set was issued on CD by Collectables in 2005. ~ Scott Yanow Fathead: Ray Charles Presents David Newman Music David "Fathead" Newman Fathead: Ray Charles Presents David Newman Songs | 1. | Hard Times | |

Fathead: Ray Charles Presents David Newman
$11.15 AUTO BIO: It's a long story, more fit for a novel than a paragraph. The short of it is that I've been writing songs since the day I received my first guitar. I was always fascinated with music, always wanted to be one of those people who could play music. Since the moment I got my first guitar I couldn't put it down. It was May of 1995, the month I graduated from high school. I wrote constantly. I spent most of my life at that point in the basement. I would record into this old RCA boom box through its built-in microphone. I must have fifty cassette tapes in a box in the garage. From there, I moved to the four track. My recordings improved with the quality of my songs. I can't tell you how many songs I've written to date. I'd like to know. I'd guess it's somewhere around 200. In 2004, I began tracking my first real studio record. I'd tried and failed to make it happen for years. The whole thing fell together nicely with the right people around. The record, Boomerang, was released in December 2005. For the first time, I was getting airplay in states other than my own. Soon, the record had been featured on a slew of television shows: The Ghost Whisperer, Army Wives, Joan of Arcadia, Whistler, Lincoln Heights, and Harper's Island. I started work on my follow up record, Time for Change, in the fall of 2007. I'd wake early each morning and sit immediately at the kitchen table to write. The horn and string orchestrations came with the lyrical ...
