Personnel: Don Ewell (piano); Don Ewell; Charles Burrell (double bass); Barbara Dane (vocals, guitar). Liner Note Authors: Alun Morgan; Alun Morgan. Recording information: Phipps Auditorium, Denver, CO (12/14/1966). This collector's LP is one of the better Don Ewell records. Captured in concert in 1966, Ewell performs duets with bassist Charles Burrell (including Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines and Fats Waller medleys), plays a couple of other Morton numbers ("The Pearls" and "Sweet Substitute") and backs singer Barbara Dane on four trad jazz favorites. A well-rounded effort that finds Ewell paying tribute to his main influences, this frequently joyous album is becoming increasingly difficult to find. ~ Scott Yanow Don Ewell Denver Concert Songs Denver Concert Review

Denver Concert MP3 Album
$11.69 Personnel: O.C., Pharoahe Monch (rap vocals); Roc Rader (scratches, background vocals); Tommy, X-Treme, Kutz, Stone, Kev Geeda (background vocals). Producers: Buckwild, Prestige, Organized Konfusion, D.J. Ogee, Lord Finesse. Recorded at Battery Studios, Unique Recording, Soundtracks and Power Play Studios, New York. All songs written by O.C. Includes samples from "Hey Young World" (as performed by Slick Rick), "Searchin'" (as performed by Roy Ayers), "Fresh Is The Word" (as performed by Mantronix) and "Sound Of The Police" (as performed by KRS-One). Wild Pitch recording artist O.C. was first seen as a guest on Organized Konfusion's "Fudge Pudge," but it wasn't until his own full-length debut, WORD...LIFE, that he proved to be one of rap's finest up-and-coming lyricists. In fact, his initial single, "Time's Up," answered the prayers of hip-hop fans who watched their music dominated by phony rappers who "pose lyrical but really ain't true." WORD...LIFE gathers together some of hip-hop's top underground producers (Buckwild, Lord Finesse, Organized Konfusion), but it's more than just the phat ...

Where these 1956-1957 recordings from guitarist Kenny Burrell and his all-star septet and sextet differ is that they were made in the confines of Rudy Van Gelder's recording studio, where the musicians were able to stretch out on two of the most memorable modern long-distance jam sessions of all time -- All Night Long and All Day Long. Initially available as individual LPs and then together as a two-fer, this is a welcome reissue from the Prestige vaults, showcasing perhaps the finest collective groups the Detroiter ever fronted.
