(1 Customer Review)
Although released in February of 1966 to correspond with NBC-TV's short-lived variety series -- which had premiered a month earlier -- The Sammy Davis, Jr. Show is not a soundtrack per se. In fact, it was assembled from five different studio sessions, some dating as far back as Davis' 1961 hit "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and the 1963 signature song "Hey There." Cole Porter's "We Open in Venice" -- with fellow Rat Packers Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra -- first surfaced on 1963's Kiss Me Kate Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre album. The Davis/Martin duet "Sam's Song" had been the B-side to the Billy May-conducted "Me and My Shadow" single in 1962. The remainder emphasizes Davis' innate affinity and apt interpretations of show tunes from the small screen ("My Mother the Car") to the Broadway stage. The latter category is especially worthy of mention, as both "This Dream" and the distinctive highlight "Feeling Good" are from the Anthony Newley/Leslie Bricusse score of The Roar of the Greasepaint...The Smell of the Crowd. Other numbers from the play had been excerpted on Davis' previous platter, Sammy's Back on Broadway. The vocalist stretches himself somewhat on English translations of the Charles Aznavour compositions "J'Aime Paris au Mois de Mai" titled "Paris Is at Her Best in May" and "J'En Deduis Que Je T'Aime," translated as "Love at Last You Have Found Me." [With the album having been out of print for nearly four decades, Collectors' Choice Music issued The Sammy Davis, Jr. Show on CD as part of the label's comprehensive restoration of his 1960s Reprise Records catalog.] ~ Lindsay Planer
Personnel: Sammy Davis, Jr. (vocals); Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra (vocals).

$15.95 | | Barbara Cook Champion Season: A Salute To Gower Champion CD (1999)
Sammy Davis, Jr. Show
$12.25 Gower Champion was a dancer, a choreographer, and a director of musicals; he was not a songwriter. Therefore, the idea of organizing a club act (or a record album) consisting of songs from shows he was associated with is, strictly speaking, dubious. The best way to salute Champion would be to present a selection of the dances he performed and created. But Barbara Cook is a singer, not a dancer, and the show tune is her area of expertise. After beginning this live album from the Café Carlyle with a medley of songs from two shows Champion directed on Broadway, "We Love You Conrad" (rendered as "We love you, Gower") from Bye Bye Birdie and "Before the Parade Passes By" and "It Only Takes a Moment" from Hello, Dolly!, Cook notes that, among his more prominent ...

| | Anti-Nowhere League So What: Early Demos & Live Abuse CDs (2006)
Sammy Davis, Jr. Show
$17.35 The Anti-Nowhere League were living proof that Great Britain learned little if anything from the media phenomenon of the Sex Pistols in the late '70s. By 1982, one might imagine that guardians of public morality and foes of punk rock would have figured out that declaring a band to be wildly offensive and a threat to the standing order would only guarantee their success, but for a brief moment history repeated itself as "So What" and "Streets of London" were banned across the U.K. while shops that found copies couldn't keep them in stock, and the shows that were allowed to go on became fast sell-outs. The funniest part of this instance of history repeating itself is that unlike the Sex Pistols, who were a cracking good rock band with something to say, the Anti-Nowhere League's music was clumsy more often than it was inspired, and for all the crudity of their lyrics, the band's rudeness seemed more silly than offensive; ...
