Maggie Cheung won the best actress award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival for her performance in writer/director (and ex-husband) Olivier Assayas' Clean, and one can assume that some part of that award is owed to her singing of four songs in the film, songs that anchor this "music from the motion picture" soundtrack. Those tracks, written by Dean Wareham (who also collaborates with Britta Phillips on "Knives from Bavaria") and David Roback, are given slow, becalmed arrangements, and Cheung, who plays an aspiring singer (and, as the title suggests, recovering drug addict) in the film, dreamily croons her way through them in a manner reminiscent of Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. (You half-expect her second number, "Down in the Light," to break into the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" given the acoustic guitar chords.) Adding to the low-key feel are three ambient tracks by Brian Eno. The only number that picks things up, at least musically, is Metric's "Dead Disco," a dance-rock number that complains about the state of music and is repeated at the end in a "clean -- live film version." This is modern down-tempo music to accompany the tragic story told in the film. ~ William Ruhlmann

$6.09 The title Heavy Metal is somewhat misleading. Sure, this terrific soundtrack from the 1981 animated cult favorite features heavy metal and hard rock numbers. But the title refers to National Lampoon's sci-fi/fantasy magazine on which the film is based. Musically, Heavy Metal offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Heavy Metal was originally a double album, but at 62 minutes it fits just fine on one CD. Sixteen songs are contributed by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, Riggs, and Trust; Cheap Trick, Felder, and Riggs each provide two. Most songs are exclusive to this soundtrack. The best-known song here is Journey's ...

$9.65 Maurice Jarre wrote the central musical motif of his score for Doctor Zhivago, "Lara's Theme," in a few minutes in a hotel, amid a frantic five-week rush to score the 197-minute movie. That theme made the Doctor Zhivago soundtrack album one of the biggest selling soundtrack of the 1960s, a considerable feat when one reckons in the competition from A Hard Day's Night, Never on Sunday, A Man and a Woman, Exodus, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. ...
