This album is a 15-track introduction to Delay 68 Records, a label intending to speicalize in styles including folk, funk, psychedelic, progressive, Ye-Ye, and more. Andy Votel (Twisted Nerve) compiled the 15 tracks and did the artwork.
Compiled by DJ/Twisted Nerve label founder Andy Votel, Folk Is Not a Four Letter Word -- the third in a series of discs previously spotlighting prog and glam, respectively -- documents the mind-expanding funk-folk of the late '60s and early '70s, a subgenre notable for its dreamy grooves and gentle, nuanced rhythms. For music so clearly born of a particular time and place, this is genuinely timeless stuff, presciently anticipating the neo-soul of a later generation -- its 15 tracks are presented with an emphasis on the kind of uniform mood and painstaking pacing that more haphazardly compiled sets miss altogether. It's perfect Sunday morning listening -- airy and spacious, but never too light for its own good. Highlights include Brigitte Fontaine's "Brigitte," Kathy Smith's "It's Taking So Long," and Breakout's cinematic "Warm Up My Lips." ~ Jason Ankeny
15 tracks compiled by Andy Votel! Andy has done remix and production projects with Death in Vegas, Lamb, and Badly Drawn Boy (Damon Gough). His debut album Styles Of The Unexpected came out in 2001. This 15-track compilation features tracks from Kathy Smith, Sarofeen & Smoke, Brigitte Fontaine, Linda Perhacs, The Poppy Family and more. Delay 68. 2005. Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word CD music
$10.15 On their third album, Shivering King and Others, Dead Meadow continues to prove just how apt their name is, crafting vast guitar epics that have all the beauty and strangeness of a frostbitten field at midnight. While both their self-titled debut and Howls From the Hills showed power and promise, they were still defined and confined by the heavy influence of forebears such as Zeppelin and Hendrix, as well as by contemporaries such as Bardo Pond. On this album -- which is also their Matador debut -- Dead Meadow seems to have found their own voice ...

Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word music CDs
$13.25 Even among the ranks of marginalized old-time blues singers, Luella Miller is singularly obscure and sadly underrated. Conventionally assessed as an unimaginative moaner who tended to sing the same redundant blues melody over and over again, this woman has been an easy target for persnickety music critics and deserves to be reevaluated. Trying to apply normal entertainment standards to music like this is a pointless exercise in postmodern impatience. If her "complete" recordings are to be laid end to end and absorbed sequentially without interruption, the listener must suspend all preconceived expectations and defer to the overwhelming sense of ritual directly resulting from what Anthony Braxton might call a repetition structure. In this sense, what some folks consider limitations are really assets. Against an intimate and unperturbed background the singer's emotional emphases stand out in high relief, while each song's formal simplicity accentuates every nuance of the instrumental accompaniments. Guitarist Lonnie Johnson is heard playing ...

Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word songs
$12.95 "I can feel the pain, Lord, it's raining in my heart," Bettye LaVette howls on "The Forecast," and it sounds like it. On this stunning comeback -- her first American release in over 20 years -- the feisty soul singer rips through an hour of music with the pent-up hunger of a caged tiger at feeding time. Helped immeasurably by producer/songwriter Dennis Walker, best known for his breakout work with Robert Cray, LaVette moans, ...

Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word album
$12.89 Another long period of silence followed Buck Hill's 2000 album, Uh-Huh! Buck Hill Live at Montpelier, but six years later, at the age of 79, the resilient mailman-by-day, hard-bopper-by-night returned to the recording scene fronting a soul-jazz organ trio. Here, Hill's big, assertive tenor sax tone seems to take on the dimensions of that of Hank Crawford or Stanley ...

$12.39 It's appropriate that "When A Man Loves a Woman" is included in the title of the Percy Sledge compilation ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE. Not only is the song one of Sledge's greatest moments, but the singer's impassioned wail on it puts the song among the very greatest ...
