While Ashanti emerged from the fierce world of the Murder Inc. label and has continued to ally herself with Irv Gotti and his posse, she has always possessed a downy softness untouched by the controversy swirling around her circle. As Ashanti explains the title of her third proper studio record, CONCRETE ROSE, it represents her dual existence in the gritty street life of hip-hop and the gentler world of R&B. While hip-hop eases its way into her music, it is not the main driving force (a la Mary J. Blige); with Ashanti, hip-hop is peppered into her music, informing her evocations of desire, hope, and regret.
Here, Ashanti retains the tenderness that she built her reputation on, but proves she's unafraid to take chances on this always-engaging, often-surprising record. She opens with the slow-groove ballad, "Still Down," but swiftly ups the ante with the borderline-industrial "Only U," with its dark, thrashing keyboards tempered by a sweet message of sensual love. Ashanti also flirts with the styles of Jill Scott and Angie Stone on the empowering, neo-soul number "Don't Let Them" and sings over an almost-surreal harp melody on "Every Lil' Thing." With CONCRETE ROSE, Ashanti takes on many new musical elements, adding to both her appeal and her artistic depth.

Concrete Rose CD music
$11.25 ASHANTI won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.
Ashanti was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Foolish" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
The young R&B thrush Ashanti makes an impressive showing on her self-titled debut album. Unlike many of her peers, Ashanti doesn't resort to vocal histrionics; this siren is more concerned with communicating the emotion of a song than showing off her chops. In fact, the reigning mood on this disc is a gauzy, slow-burn feel that makes the most of Ashanti's sensual, low-key style. Often she seems to be whispering right into your ear. Though there's an undercurrent of hip-hop-influenced production, that simmering, late-night feel remains consistent through the torch ballad "Foolish" (when will these spurned lovers learn?), the considerably less tortured "Happy," and the irresistible come-on of "Movies." Perhaps ...
| | Al Jarreau Christmas CD (2008)
Concrete Rose music CDs
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting.
Arrangers: Chris Walker ; Clare Fischer; Brent Fisher; Joe Turano; David Witham; Jay Graydon; Al Jarreau; Larry ...

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Concrete Rose CD music
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels ...

| | Spearhead Chocolate Supa Highway CD (1997)
Concrete Rose album
$11.59 Spearhead has a lot to live up to with its second album. The band's debut, HOME, was a highly original mix of hip-hop, funk and R&B that established singer/songwriter Michael Franti and company as a force to be reckoned with. Three years and a few lineup changes later, CHOCOLATE SUPA HIGHWAY shifts the perspective a little, leaning more toward hip-hop and introducing a strong reggae flavor (reggae messiah Bob Marley's son Stephen makes a guest vocal appearance on "Rebel Music").
Franti's expressive baritone and sharp, socio-political lyrics are still the focus, and songs like "Gas Gauge" show how Spearhead can illustrate the tribulations of modern urban life ...

| | Tussle Telescope Mind CD (2006)
Concrete Rose songs
$13.29 Moving away from the dub-centricity of their debut album, San Francisco groove-mongers Tussle explore the Krautier side of instrumental rhythm rock on their second full-length outing Telescope Mind. And in referencing Krautrock we're talking specifically about the Motorik style, of the forward-rushing feeling of racing down the "Autobahn" with Kraftwerk or soaring the astral highways with Neu!. The Kraut influence is most apparent on the obviously titled "Kindermusik" which burbles along placidly on analog synth squiggles until the rhythm section shimmies in, sounding like what Cluster might have had they any booty-shaking tendencies at all (which they didn't) and the airiness of the keyboard passages conjures images of Neu! jamming with Bootsy Collins on bass. Overall this outing is somewhat more electronic sounding than their previous work -- while the two live drum kits are still organic and huge in the mix, the bass and other instruments are manipulated and effected to blend with keyboards and samplers, ...
