Havepianoewill Swing
$55.98 Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary ...

| | Dino: The Essential Dean Martin CD (2004)
Havepianoewill Swing
$10.89 Nearly a decade after Dean Martin's death, the crooner's fans were finally given the definitive Dino collection. While there was already a two-disc summation of Martin's Capitol recordings, as well as several compilations of his Reprise material, the single-disc, 30-track DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN contains a generous selection of the best of his work, culling from both labels' vaults. Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son became a singing star in the 1950s, mostly by virtue of his smooth, easy charm, apparent both in his vocal style and his public image. That charm is crystallized here--the South American lilt of "Sway;" the spare, countryish "Memories Are Made of This" (not insignificantly covered later by Johnny Cash); the laissez-faire swing of "Ain't That a Kick in the Head"--it all bespeaks an uncommon coolness that was Martin's to burn. DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN catches all of his best-known tunes, from ...

| | John Coltrane Plays For Lovers CD (2003)
Havepianoewill Swing
$8.19 Few would deny John Coltrane's genius or his substantial influence on an entire generation of jazz musicians. That said, however, his is not necessarily the name that comes immediately to mind when you're thinking about a soundtrack for romance -- Coltrane's trademark "sheets of sound" approach to modal improvisation and his sometimes harsh tone may get listeners in the mood for many things, but love might not be one of them. However, this collection of ballad recordings originally issued on various albums between 1957 and 1958 makes a good case for Trane as a bedroom minstrel. He might not play with the elegant insinuation of Ben Webster or Lester Young, but his powerful tone is modulated and his incredible capacity for melodic invention is kept under control on such deathless material as the Billy Eckstine composition "I Want to Talk About You," Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life," and the inevitable renditions of "Stardust" and "Like Someone in Love." It doesn't hurt at all that he is accompanied on the majority of these tracks by pianist Red Garland and bassist Paul Chambers, who by this point already formed the core of his most effective ensemble. If you own an extensive Coltrane catalog you'll probably have most of this material already, but even so, this collection makes a handy and eminently useful distillation of one aspect of his art. ...
