After a freak tornado destroys Las Vegas, scientists determine that unusually destructive weather could be building over the U.S. When a category five hurricane forms over the Great Lakes and a band of Force Five tornadoes moves up the Midwest toward Chicago, the resulting collision of deadly wather fronts not only decimates great cities; it ultimately causes the entire North American power grid to implode, effectively leaving the U.S. without power for at least six months. Thomas Gibson, Nancy McKeon, Randy Quaid, Dianne Wiest, and Brian Dennehy star. An extravagant CBS miniseries that serves as a vehicle for some spectacular special effects, the DAY OF DESTRUCTION is fast approaching Chicago in the form of three separate weather systems set to collide there: a tornado cluster that has already laid waste to Las Vegas, an Arctic front from the north, and a warm storm front from the south. A subplot involving a national energy crisis, during which the national power grid fails, is navigated by a heroic Mitch Benson (Thomas Gibson); he battles the capitalist superstructure to restore power to the city, so that people can be warned in time. The series follows the major players in this natural disaster melodrama, including Andy Goodman (Brian Dennehy, SHE HATE ME), a meteorologist about to retire who discovers the imminent disaster. Amy Harkins (Nancy McKeon) is a local TV journalist who is reporting on the crippling drought that has dragged on for weeks. She chafes under bureaucratic strictures, which forbid her to present the truth about who's really behind the power grid failure. Finally there's Tornado Tommy (Randy Quaid, INDEPENDENCE DAY), a thrill-seeker who chases storms in his tricked-out SUV. This latest in a string of television disaster films is an exciting, breathtaking nightmare scenario that is sure to keep audiences on their toes. Randy Quaid and the Japanese tourists was the highlight of t From the plucky young reporter, (with something to prove) to the pregnant lady stuck in the elevator, this movie is one badly acted cliché after the next. If you can watch this movie without rolling your eyes at the tired and poorly delivered lines, I tip my hat to you.
Good quality special effects cannot carry a movie, sadly these were also lacking.
Randy Quaid and the Japanese tourists were the highlight of the film.

The film stars Barbara Stanwyck as the title character, a tough, spoiled, willful heiress married to the local D.A., Walter O'Neil (Kirk Douglas), a weak-willed alcoholic. When old friend Sam Masterson (Van Heflin) suddenly returns to town after many years away, he approaches Walter to help with the case of Toni Marashek (Lizabeth Scott), a friend who has been falsely accused of a crime. Sam is surprised, at first, to learn of Walter's marriage, knowing both of the parties, but quickly begins to put the pieces ...
