Dino: The Essential Dean Martin is an attempt by Capitol Records to fill up a single CD to the brim (30 tracks in nearly 78 minutes) with Dean Martin hits in the manner of the Beatles' 1. It's a welcome development from a label that was previously content to survey the same territory on the 1998 collection Greatest Hits: King of Cool, which contained only 16 tracks and ran less than 50 minutes. Martin put 36 recordings in the pop singles charts between 1949 and 1969, and 23 of them are found here. Of the four Top 40 hits not included, the most notable is the 1964 version of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You." The collection does include the 1960 non-hit version of that song instead, a decision that probably was made to reduce the number of essentially similar arrangements heard on Martin's '60s singles for Reprise Records. After he hit number one with "Everybody Loves Somebody" in 1964 using a '50s rock & roll-style triplet rhythm he repeated the same approach several more times ("The Door Is Still Open to My Heart," "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On") before moving on to a pop-country style in such hits as "Houston." ...

Numbers return with their most focused set of songs yet on their second full-length, In My Mind All the Time. While remaining true to the blocky, almost childlike dance-punk of their previous work, the trio embellishes its sound in exciting ways, making In My Mind All the Time the band's most expansive work to date as well. Granted, this isn't an especially difficult feat; Numbers' early releases were chaotic enough that the added structure the group brings to these songs makes it possible to add some clarity and diversity without sounding slick. In My Mind All the Time's last two songs reflect where Numbers has been and where the band is going: "Obsessed" is a violent miniature reminiscent of their Life work, with a theme that fits their deliberately repetitive sound perfectly. A beautiful collection of folk, blues and haikus, WATCH THE STARS melds a folk-boom topicality with a fine "beat" sensibility, uniting the Afro-American West Coast with suburban London. Classical guitarist Tim Walker and double-bass player Danny Thompson of Pentangle accompany.
The second and final record Dorris Henderson did with guitarist John Renbourn sharing billing as accompanist, 1967's Watch the Stars was similar in most respects to the first, 1965's There You Go. Again, it matched the American folksinger's strong, emotive voice to Renbourn's excellent picking, though the guitar work isn't as flashy or striking as what he'd play on subsequent Pentangle and solo releases. A little texture is added via contributions by bassist Danny Thompson (who of course went on to play and record with Renbourn in Pentangle) and guitarist Tim Walker (who also wrote one of the better tracks, "It's Been a Long Time"). The material was a little more adventurous than the largely traditional debut had been; there were a few traditional folk songs here, but also covers of material by Bob Dylan, Hedy West, and British folksinger Anne Briggs, as well as a few originals by Henderson herself. To its credit, it includes some material that is more moodily melodic than much folk of the time. "Mosaic Patterns" (co-written by Henderson and Briggs) and "Gonna Tell My Lord" (written by Henderson alone) are particular standouts in that respect, the latter featuring some of her most stirring, spiritual vocals. The 2005 CD reissue adds, as a bonus track, the non-LP 1967 single "Message to Pretty," a cover of a song from Love's first album.
