THE KEY TO THE KINGDOM contains the 16 surviving recordings by the mysterious gospel singer Washington Phillips, originally released by Columbia Records between 1927 and 1929, as well as four tracks from the even more obscure gospel duo of Blind Mamie and A.C. Forehand that were originally released on the compilation STOREFRONT AND STREETCORNER GOSPEL 1927-1929. This Yazoo release features far superior remastered sound and crucial new liner notes that cast new light on Phillips's life and work. Most interestingly, the notes deduce that rather than playing the obscure dolceola, he is in fact playing two modified zithers simultaneously.
Liner Note Author: Pat Conte.
Recording information: 02/12/1927-02/12/1929.
Photographer: Gary Harrison.

Key To The Kingdom album
$13.09 As one of the pioneers in Tex-Mex music, Doug Sahm fused rock & roll, R&B, conjunto, and country. This posthumous release, containing some of the last recordings made before his death, finds Sahm focusing on the country part of that equation. As this disc makes plain, country music was a major part of Sahm's life and music, and these tracks are pure, dyed-in-the-wool honky-tonk in the grand old style. Most are original tunes, and "Oh No! Not Another One" shows Sahm's feelings about country by humorously expressing his dismay at the way pop posers have taken over the country music scene. "Texas ...
| | Sir Douglas Quintet 1+1+1=4/The Return Of Doug Saldana CD (2002)
Key To The Kingdom CD music
$17.75 Raven's two-fer of the Sir Douglas Quintet's 1+1+1=4 and The Return of Doug Saldaņa, released in 1970 and 1971 respectively, appeared roughly around the same time Audium reissued the two albums separately with bonus tracks, but it's tough to complain about a sudden surplus of their Smash material when it was so very hard to find on CD for many years. Though one other album for Smash followed -- 1973's Rough Edges, consisting mainly of earlier sessions, three tracks of which are added as bonus tracks here (along with "Michoacan" from the soundtrack of the 1972 film ...

Key To The Kingdom music CDs
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the ...
| | Mates Of State Team Boo CD (2003)
Key To The Kingdom songs
$10.15 Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naīve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who ...

Key To The Kingdom album
$10.85 With a solid core of fine pickers, a handful of guests, and a dozen high-stepping songs, the Larry Stephenson Band shows exactly what it's made of on Clinch Mountain Mystery. This is hard-driving traditional bluegrass, highlighted by Stephenson's high-longsome lead and lots of hot instrumental work. Although the title song is a ...
