Hi Power 2005 album
$9.59 After growing up on a mix of traditional Cuban music and hardcore West Coast rap, Pitbull allows both sounds to influence his particular brand of crunk. Sprinkles of Miami's past also abound on the frenetic album, from the flared-out bass of "Get on the Floor" to "She's Freaky," which recalls the ...

| | Sharon Jones & The Dapkings Dap-Dippin' With Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings CD (2002)
Hi Power 2005 album
$10.55 Personnel Sharon Jones (vocals); Binky Griptite (spoken vocals, guitar);
Anda Szilagyi (trumpet); Otis Youngblood (tenor saxophone); Jack Zapata (baritone saxophone); Earl Maxton (organ); Bosco Mann (bass); Homer Steinweiss (drums); Bugaloo Velez (congas).
It's hard to believe that Sharon Jones' debut LP is a product of the year 2002, for several reasons. Given the excellent singles she recorded for Desco beginning in the late '90s, it seems like she would have gotten the opportunity for a full-length sooner; plus, her brand of raw, heavy, hard-driving funk is such a throwback to the '70s, and she pulls it off so well, that you wonder how she could have escaped that decade without at least a few rare, classic 45s (in the vein of labelmate Lee Fields). It's not hard to believe she once made her living as a prison guard, based on the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense performances she belts out on Dap Dippin' With Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the first full-length release on Desco's descendant, Dap-Tone. Backed by the Dap-Tone house band (a conglomeration of studio pros with connections reaching back to the Desco orbit), Jones delivers a storming set of tunes that would have sounded perfectly at home on the James Brown's ...
| | Nasum Shift CD (2004)
Hi Power 2005 CD music
$12.49 Nasum's fourth full-length, Shift continued a prolific period for the band, who released Helvete in 2003 and also had members pitch in on Regurgitate's 2003 release Deviant -- meaning they had a hand in two of the top handful of grindcore releases to come out that year. Despite its title, Shift is not a change in direction for the band like its predecessor was; in fact, at first some fans might be a little disappointed at how similar it feels to Helvete, which was a noticeable advance from the previous album, Human 2.0. The same combination of punishing, abrasive grindcore, strategically placed mid-tempo breakdowns, and classic Swedish death metal overtones is still present here, and the production is also similar. Then again, if you are a fan of quality grindcore, neither of those aspects is a negative, so what's there to complain about? Standout track "Wrath" is a mostly mid-tempo number with a mosh pit ready riff on par with Human 2.0's "The Idiot Parade," while more strictly grindcore songs such as "The Deepest Hole" and "Fury" once again demonstrate the subtle melodic riffing prowess ...
| | Stephen Duffy Duffy CD (1995) Bonus Tracks; England
Hi Power 2005 music CDs
$12.79 A new label, a new image, a new sound, and the absence of the name "Stephen." Once again, Duffy is able to keep his listeners on edge by not doing anything remotely expected. Sure, the smooth voice and wonderful melodies are still present, but now Duffy seems influenced by the harder edge of '90s Brit-pop artists such as Blur, Oasis, and the like. Luckily, he is able to make it work. This CD has a harder edge to it, but it is still a treat to the ears. Duffy continues to write topical lyrics, mixing his own personal life ("London Girls") with political commentary ("Ghetto Child"), all set to toe-tapping, guitar driven pop music. Duffy is able to finally show off his electric guitar talents, and this alone is justification for the existence of this CD. He really is a very talented and creative player, mixing in interesting solos, as well wonderful acoustic playing, not too far adrift from his Lilac Time days (just listen to the incredibly, almost heartbreaking "Rachel"). This is a well-crafted album, full of great sounds, and enough surprises and variety in the pacing of the music to keep the listener hooked. He also uses instruments very well throughout. Caroline Dale deserves special note for her wonderful cello playing on the beautiful "Smitten." The production is crisp and not overdone. Duffy also arranges vocals on this album to both create atmosphere and move the song along. Listen to the vocals of "Ghetto Child," and it is clear that the song is so effective because of the layered vocals. Overall a very good album, much more pleasing than his 1993 release ...
