Return Of The Black Death music CDs

"Never Miss The Water," featuring Me'Shell NdegeOcello, was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Chaka Khan's career through the 1996 release of Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol. 1 -- involving eight albums with Rufus and eight solo albums, along with assorted collaborations -- produced roughly 40 Top 40 R&B singles, not to mention dozens of undervalued album cuts. So it is clear that any one-disc attempt at wrapping up the highlights is bound to work more like a sampler than a true best-of. And though this release is given the "Vol. 1" tag, it remained without a sequel as late as 2005, when Reprise reissued it without altering the contents. Yet another frustration is that previously unreleased songs take the place of missing classics like "Sweet Thing," "Clouds," "Fate," "Close the Door," and "Stay." (That's just for starters.) Nonetheless, the disc does contain Khan's most popular work, from ballads like "Through the Fire" to anthems like "I'm Every Woman" and "Ain't Nobody," along with other radio staples, such as "I Feel for You" and "Tell Me Something ...
| | Acid King Busse Woods CD (1999)
Return Of The Black Death songs
$11.49 Black Sabbath was a major influence on a lot of the bands who recorded for Man's Ruin in the late '90s, and Acid King certainly doesn't escape the influence of early Sabbath on Busse Woods. This isn't to say that Acid King is a Sabbath clone -- far from it. True, Lori S.' singing owes a debt to Ozzy Osbourne, and her slow, forceful, brutal guitar riffs recall Tony Iommi's contributions to Sabbath. But the Bay Area band's heavy metal/stoner rock tends to communicate a looser, more jam-minded outlook than the music of Sabbath, and there are other direct or indirect influences one could cite as well, such as Robin Trower, Jimi Hendrix, and Hawkwind. Sabbath tends to get right to the point, whereas Lori S. enjoys stretching out when it's appropriate. Even though Acid King's brand of metal has often been described as stoner rock, one needn't be a stoner or use drugs to appreciate such metallic ...

| | Cathy Segal-Garcia Secret Life CD (2001)
Return Of The Black Death music CDs
$16.45 In Southern California jazz circles, Cathy Segal-Garcia has a reputation for being a very straight-ahead singer -- a swinging improviser who obviously knows her way around the Tin Pan Alley songbook. But Segal-Garcia reveals another side of herself on Secret Life, which is a major departure from the straight-ahead jazz albums she is best known for. The only standard on this CD is Buddy Johnson's "Save Your Love for Me"; everything else on Secret Life was written by Segal-Garcia herself, and her writing is by no means limited to jazz. Actually, Secret Life is best described as a pop/adult contemporary album with jazz, folk and R&B influences; this time, Segal-Garcia moves into singer/songwriter territory and gives the impression that she has been spending a lot of time listening to Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Julia Fordham and Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie -- and that singer/songwriter perspective serves her well on introspective offerings like "The Song," "If It Could Be" and the haunting "My Russia." Secret Life indicates that if Segal-Garcia had decided to make pop her main focus instead of jazz, she would have had a meaningful career in the singer/songwriter field. But stylistically, Secret Life is the exception instead of the rule for the Southern California resident, and this CD is unlikely to please bop snobs. Quite frankly, the jazz world is full of musical ideologues who have very specific ideas about how artists should sound -- people who believe that jazz is the true faith and that anyone who performs rock, R&B, folk, reggae, rap or country is an infidel. But not all jazz fans are that myopic, and those who are open to hearing Segal-Garcia explore non-jazz territory will find Secret Life to be an enjoyable addition to her catalog. ~ Alex Henderson
"In Control: Jazz singer Cathy Segal-Garcia's style leans toward heavily melodic vehicles that show off her flowing, at-ease, rhythmic sense...A voice that's soft and warm as cashmere."Zan Stewart, Los Angeles Times "If you ...
