SOLARIZED is former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown's fourth solo outing. Like his legendary first band and previous solo albums, SOLARIZED combines heady electric guitar sounds, club-derived dance beats, winding Middle Eastern-themed melodies, and memorable pop hooks. There are idiosyncratic flourishes here and there, like the loungy, down-tempo trip-hop of "The Sweet Fantastic" and the mariachi-styled horns on "Time Is My Everything," but, for the most part, Brown sticks to the groovy, swirling guitar-based Brit-pop he does best.
Opener "Longsight M13" leads off with a snake-charmer verse, orbiting guitar leads, and electronic frippery before sinking into the heavy dance groove of the chorus. The expansive melody of "Destiny or Circumstance" proves Brown has retained his ability to construct durable tunes, while "Kiss Ya Lips (No I.D.)" rides a jumpy, infectious house beat. "Keep What Ya Got" was co-written by Oasis figurehead Noel Gallagher, and the resulting single (which bears traces of both Oasis and the Stone Roses) is a textbook example of minor-key Brit-pop. The album is shot through with deeply textured production and effects, backwards guitar, and massive solos in ways that should please Brown fanatics.
On his fourth solo album, Ian Brown marches on as confidently as ever, mixing mystical aural textures with massively addictive melodies. Album opener "Longsight M13" is as catchy as any song in Brown's back catalog and continues the spacy vibes of his previous full-length effort, Music of the Spheres. "Time Is My Everything" blends Stone Roses ephemera with dusty Spanish horns straight out of an Ennio Morricone spaghetti Western film score, while a goth guitar backdrop on "Destiny or Circumstance" warps the mind like nothing since the Sisters of Mercy. There is sometimes a sense, as on the title track, that Brown has gone a little too far into the stratosphere, if not wacky Kula Shaker territory, but the album's strident catchiness and Brown's wispy, wired voice are grounding forces strong enough to drown out any sense of tackiness. For every step into Middle Eastern exoticism, there's also a step to the dancefloor or a turn to early-'80s electro, such as "Kiss Ya Lips (No I.D.)" or the sprightly, wired background keyboards on "Longsight M13." Stone Roses fans who haven't tracked Brown's musical progress after that band's breakup will find much to love on Solarized, another mini-masterpiece that perfectly balances mood and melody. [The U.S. edition of the album includes one song that was included as a bonus track on the Japanese edtion of Solarized ("Happy Ever After") and one unique bonus track: "Lovebug" .] ~ Tim DiGravina

Ian Brown Solarized Songs Solarized Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Ian Brown's best LP Easily his most consistent and understated release. Not many anthems as such on display here, but that allows the progression of the album to chug along in a freer manner. Some of his earlier albums, in my opinion, although containing some really great songs, sometimes had a slightly confused feel to the tracklist order. but SOLARIZED LP's smooth textures, surgically precise rhythms and smooth production values all move along at a very logical and pleasing pace. This album is a definite grower. and also an album with a very rewarding and positive feel to it. Submitted by Moses (Yorkshire, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Solarized
$11.05 While the vast majority of post-punk bands who have an obvious taste for the blues seem to enjoy taking the style apart and messing around with the bits and pieces, the Black Keys are the (relative) traditionalists within the subgenre. With their two-piece, no-bass format, there's no room for clutter or wank, and the raunchy fuzz of Dan Auerbach's guitar (and drummer Patrick Carney's production) owes more to the Gories/Blues Explosion/White Stripes school of aural grime than anything else, but look past all that and the Black Keys are a straight-up blues band who could probably ...
| | Television Marquee Moon CD (1977) Remastered; Digipak
Solarized
$10.89 New York's 1970s punk was markedly different to that of Britain. Rather than reject the past, American groups deconstructed its forms and rebuilt them with recourse to the music's strengths. Television's leader, Tom Verlaine, professed admiration for Moby Grape and the folk rock of early Fairport Convention. Elements of the latter appear on this album's title track, which offers a thrilling instrumental break, built upon a modal scale. Verlaine's shimmering guitar style provides the set's focus, but his angular compositions are always enthralling. A sense of brooding mystery envelops the proceedings, and Marquee Moon retains its standing as one of the era's pivotal releases.
Rhino's 2003 expanded edition of Television's seminal debut, Marquee Moon, doesn't add much on the surface -- in addition to the de rigueur liner notes and loving packaging, all standard fare on serious ...
| | Black Keys Rubber Factory CD (2004)
Solarized
$10.09 Though the Black Keys resemble post-punk garage revivalists like the White Stripes, and are likely to raise an eyebrow among old-school blues purists, the duo packs a serious blues punch. The minimal sound of RUBBER FACTORY moves on the rickety skeleton of Dan Auerbach's fuzzed-out guitar and Patrick Carney's no-frills drumming, and stays true to the raw, electric ...
| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
Solarized
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ...
