Producer, bandleader (No-Man, Porcupine Tree) and multi-instrumentalist Steven Wilson joined forces with Israeli singer/songwriter Aviv Gefen in 2000, when Gefen invited Wilson to play with him for a series of concerts in Israel. Their first album as a duo, recording under the name Blackfield, does betray their mutual love of 1960s and 1970s classic rock, but it also contains more than a hint of an '80s influence -- at times the band sounds like a cross between Tears for Fears and a more organic-sounding Pet Shop Boys. Lyrically, they throw down the gauntlet early -- the first line of the first song goes "Here's a song from an open mind." Everything else is no big surprise: scars are mentioned more than once, as are nightmares, pain, death and sorrow. But Blackfield's sound is anything but morose. The music isn't exactly chipper, but it's always rich and pretty, and at times (as on the album-ending "Hello") it's downright grandiose. There are also quite a few sonic surprises thrown into the mix, such as the almost subliminal found-sound experimentation on "Lullaby" and the sudden incursion of Middle Eastern reeds and a drum'n'bass breakbeat in the middle of the otherwise sweet and dreamy "Scars." The bonus disc with video content makes the deal that much sweeter. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

$8.59 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound ...
| | Porcupine Tree Sky Moves Sideways CDs (1995) Digipak
Blackfield CD music
$15.19 Though Porcupine Tree's permanent lineup was in place by the time Sky Moves Sideways was complete, it was actually a combination of old and new, with a number of tracks once again done by Wilson on his own. Regardless of the provenance of one song or another, though, it was another fine release under the Porcupine Tree name, continuing the excellence of Up the Downstair while achieving a new liquid sense of drama and overall flow. Barbieri's keyboard skills alone made for a wonderful addition to the ranks, easily capturing the slow ...

| | Porcupine Tree Stupid Dream CDs (1999) With DVD; Special Edition
Blackfield songs
$15.35 Porcupine Tree's first album for K-Scope/Snapper starts out with a definite bang -- "Even Less," with some of the quartet's biggest, blasting rock epic music yet, yet also shot through with the gentler, acoustic side that makes Porcupine Tree so intimate and lovely. The net result easily calls Yes to mind, but Steven Wilson's not so high-pitched as Jon Anderson and Richard Barbieri completely avoids Rick Wakeman's extreme idiocies -- prog that knows when less is more. With that as a fine signal for the album as a whole, Stupid Dream takes it from there -- Wilson as a songwriter and singer both sounds recharged and more ambitious, while the group collectively pours it on. ...

| | Fozzy CDs (2000)
Blackfield music CDs
$8.69 Although the concept of Fozzy -- an American metal band trapped in Japan for 20 years finds that its material has been stolen by other artists -- suggests parallels with Spinal Tap, there's one very important difference: Spinal Tap wrote all its own original material, whereas Fozzy sticks exclusively to covers. So, in practice, when it's divorced from the story line of the accompanying web broadcasts, ...

$6.69 All About MeArtist comparisons:Prince;I respect this guy so much. He writes all of his material, lyrics, instrumentals, lead and background vocals, plays several instruments, will basically walk the line of the sex genre for his career and image, has a ridiculous falsetto voice and range, which is growling all the way to his highest note, is incredibly deep into his music and image and spiritual in a sense of his dedication to it as like a gandi type, isolating himself, as if going up on a mountain for every CD, not eating until it is finished. I am the same as far as the independence in the production of my music, as far as the gandi like CD making operations, will not cross or walk any line of sex genre for anything at anytime, but do rock my hair like a White boy musician down on his luck but keeping it black with the individual braids. I like my head and chest voice better than his head and chest voice. I think mine is more stronger, polished, and R&B-ish. I have a small range of false which is basically completely gritty, but I love it. I think it's what crosses me over into a Hard Rock layer. Brian McKnight; This guy is extremly polished and clean and on point in his vocals, piano playing, and the rest of his production, with a great head and chest range, as well as a strong false, a good strong R&B voice. Like Prince this guy writes all of his material in the same total productional way. He's kinda today's R&B ballet kinda soulful sound, good guy, extremly professional and extremly productive like Prince. His image is a tall good-looking charming, sweet guy, regular casual sometimes loosely form-fitting attire, kind of a good guy natual look. I believe play the keys better than him, probably not a lot though. I think my chords and progressions are more phatter. I like my head and chest voice and I think it is simuliar to his. I think mine is a little bit more grittier and sometimes churchier. His false is also higher than mines and less grittier. I'm obviously shorter in stature, less thicker. I have more of a rougher unpolished hair look, with more casual cut clean and sharp clothes look. I believe I'll have neck and neck today's R&B instrumental sound than him, that will also include a little Hard Rock which is definately the difference, as well as the fact that very clean material like country and maybe folk guitar or something. He's just an excellent musician reminding me of Nat King Cole the he sings and plays the piano in that polished way. I think he probably needs to have his own talkshow in a Pepsi Smash type format.D'Angelo; This my man. He's head, chest, and false voice is refreshingly very definative. I don't know anyone who sounds like this cat. Alike the previous 2 he is self profficient in the production of his music. Now D'Angelo's music is very soulful. Again with the stong, yet smooth, very controlled distinguishing high false. Again, I believe my keyboard skills out ...
