With Y SIGUE LA MATA DANDO, Grupo Montez De Durango continues its grand tradition of lustrous, affecting music from the rich tradition of the northwestern Mexican state of Durango. While Grupo Montez is oft considered the most prominent acts of Duranguense music, the band actually formed nearer to Canada than Mexico, in the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. Although the octet's sound is just a tad informed by the blues of their adopted city, it works more to accentuate the mournfulness and isolation that dominates the band's songs of longing, hope, and history.
The lead singles from Y SIGUE LA MATA DANDO focus on the sadness within love, a frequent theme of Grupo Montez. "Adios Amor Te Vas" wistfully relays the story of an undying love that nevertheless must end, while "Quiero Saber De Ti" tells of a loving pair that suddenly breaks up. Meanwhile, songs like "De Esta Sierra A La Otra Sierra" paint a fertile landscape of a beckoning homeland. Throughout the spirited, yet sometimes somber, affair, accordions and tubas dance over lilting guitars, striking a chord of joviality as Grupo Montez De Durango sculpts another paean to its distant home.
