A washed-up Broadway producer uses every dirty trick in the book to get his superstar ex-lover to appear in his next play. This 1934 film starred John Barrymore and Carole Lombard. Oscar Jaffe (John Barrymore), a tyrannical Broadway producer, makes a star of shy Mildred Plotka (Carole Lombard), renaming her Lily Garland and beginning a stormy romance with her. After a series of hit shows Lily leaves Jaffe and heads for Hollywood. Jaffe's shows begin to decline and he has one flop after another. The bickering pair meet accidentally on the Twentieth Century Limited train bound for New York, and Jaffe must do whatever it takes to get Lily to come back to him. TWENTIETH CENTURY is a breathless screwball comedy featuring brilliant performances from Barrymore and Lombard.
In TWENTIETH CENTURY, Oscar Jaffe (John Barrymore), a temperamental Broadway producer with a history of success and an ego to match, turns his tyrannical energies on young starlet Mildred Plotka (Carole Lombard). Before long she's renamed Lily Garland and has become the toast of the town, amid a tempestuous romantic relationship with Jaffe. Years and several successful plays later, Lily leaves for Hollywood, and Jaffe's plays begin to flop. After a disastrous show in Chicago, Jaffe encounters Lily on a train and tries everything to get her to return to Broadway, but Lily doesn't want anything to do with her former mentor. A dazzling showcase for the skills of Barrymore and Lombard and one of the first screwball comedies, TWENTIETH CENTURY boasts rapid-fire dialogue, entertainingly oddball supporting characters, and terrific writing. The film is adapted from the Hecht-MacArthur play NAPOLEON OF BROADWAY, which is based loosely on the life of producer David Merrick.
Theatrical release: May 11, 1934.
The film is based on the play NAPOLEON OF BROADWAY, based loosely on legendary producer David Merrick; it was produced for the stage by George Abbott and Philip Dunning.

Twentieth Century Quotes/Excerpts: "I close the iron door on you!"--Oscar Jaffe (John Barrymore)
Twentieth Century Reviews: "[T]hough the insults and argot reach exhilarating heights, the comedy is about possession more than romance, and the acid ending reflects a bracing sophistication."
-- Edward Karam, Entertainment Weekly "[A] classic screwball comedy that made Carole Lombard a star and gave John Barrymore his greatest screen role."-- Mike Clark, USA Today

Twentieth Century Movie Review One of the BEST John Barrymore gives a masterful performance in this incredible movie. His timing is something to be studied. Probably his greatest film in his final years. The supporting cast is pure Columbia - some of the best character actors working in the 1930's (Walter Connolly, Roscoe Karnes - right out of "It Happened One Night), and the wonderful Carole Lombard.I never get tired of this picture, and I always learn see something new in it. Not sure why the description says it is loosly based on David Merrick - not sure he was producing in the mid 1930's. Submitted by a reviewer (Boston MA) Was This Review Helpful? $14.39 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's shooting are laced with legendary ...

$9.79 Sydney (Philip Baker Hall), a mysterious professional gambler, befriends John (John C. Reilly), a young man in trouble, and teaches him the ways of making a living in the casinos of Reno. $10.19 The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side.
Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) turns on Ted, putting both Ted's and Gwen's lives in serious jeopardy. The film opens with the Hippocratic Oath, and it's easy to tell that PATHOLOGY is going to show us doctors behaving badly, and the film is in fact almost gleefully immoral, with an attractive young cast that engages in almost any kind of forbidden behavior one can imagine. Showing that he isn't afraid to take on risky roles, Ventimiglia may surprise his young fans. Director Marc Schoelermann's taste for realism extends to several convincing corpses dissected in close-up, ...
