Joe South doesn't get much credit outside of the snobbiest rock snob circles, but the man wrote some classic tunes that became huge hits for other artists, like "Hush," "Rose Garden," "Down in the Boondocks," "Games People Play," and "Untie Me." Jackpine Social Club decided it was about time South had a tribute record, and they rounded up 12 artists to honor the man with some very reverent cover versions. Apart from one or two songs -- Otis Clay's deep soul version of "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" (which shows he hasn't lost a step and should be next in line for rediscovery) and Persephone's Bees' indie cute take on "Games People Play" -- the mood is very earnest, singer/songwriter-ish, and straight-ahead. Not very snobby at all, the album would play very well in small cafes where music like this can be found. Too bad nobody (apart from Chuck Prophet on his almost mariachi romp through "Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home") captured the weird pop side of South's writing and performing but, considering the artists involved, that didn't seem to be on the agenda at all. This isn't the final word on Joe South's legacy, but it is a step in the right direction. ~ Tim Sendra
Tribute to the Atlanta born singer/songwriter Joe South, featuring Chris Von Sneidern, Kelly Hogan, Kelly Stolz and Chuck Prophet. Joe South Tribute Album Music Joe South Tribute Album Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Must have for Joe South Fans It's unfortunate that Joe South is a mostly forgotten artist of the 60's/70's pop rock era. However, this c.d by various performers proves that some people realize that South was one of the best singer/songwriters of the era. Most of the performances on this tribute album are quite good especially the ones where the performer adds a personal interpretation of the song. The most outstanding selection is Otis Clay's version of"Walk A Mile In My Shoes".In my opinion he outdoes the South original and the Elvis Presley cover version. That's how good I feel it is! Other outstanding tracks include "Down In The Boondocks", "Redneck" and "The Greatest Love" The overall sound quality of the compact disc is quite good and the packaging is nice. I wish the producers gave a brief mention of what Joe South is doing now in the linear notes. To sum up,I would like to thank all the people involved in this fine compact disc. Thank God joe Is Still Alive I love Joe South. I love his music. Without question he is one of the South's premier singer/songwtiters. A great guitar picker, pretty good producer and wonderful weaver of words and thoughts. This "tribute" is AWFUL. If Joe were dead, he'd probably be spinning in his grave. For the most part poorly produced and sung by people who don't make me believe for one second they have the slightest understanding of Joe or his music. Joe's "The Greatest Love" is one of the most beautiful songes ever written, and was completly distroyed by Kelly Hogan. The rest of the tracks are almost as bad with the notable exception of Ted Roddy's version of "Fool Me". Not Bad at all. Unfortuanetly, it's the only bright spot on the effort. I hope someday someone will do a fitting tribute to this great musical treasure and his music. I'm gonna put Joe's 20 Greatest back in the CD player and try to erase this music from my head. Wish I had my 16 bucks back. Submitted by cbear (Tampa, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Comeback Album for a Former Great A man of his era, Joe South has always had a rep as being his own man. Many, many of his songs for others he wrote and/or published several which crossed country with rock. Now 66 years old (2006), this gathering of his music comes forth. Always a better writer than performer, Joe has had his bad with the good. Losing brother in the 1970's, a recluse up into the 1980's, a prison sentence in the late 1980's for drugs (FPC-Atlanta). Good to see him back and kicking..... Submitted by tenn357 (Nashville, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
