Shot at the world famous Troubadour nightclub on Hollywood's Sunset Strip, Old 97's Live captures all the excitement and energy of the band in concert. It includes songs from the CD "Drag It Up," as well as fan favorites from the band's long career. Also includes behind-the-scenes footage as well as interviews with the band. Initially dismissed as riding the crest of the "Alt-Country" wave that flooded pop music in the late 1990s, the Old 97's have proved their unique talent by remaining prolific and popular after several years. The Dallas-born quartet took a brief hiatus after their fifth album, SATELLITE RIDES, but returned with a bang with 2004s DRAG IT UP, which garnered kudos from fans and critics alike. Here, the indomitable rockers are captured live at Hollywood's famed Troubador, energetically performing a set of nearly two dozen of their most beloved tunes. Old 97'S - Live film
$13.39 Though he would eventually succumb to cancer in 2003, on this 2000 release life hadn't killed Warren Zevon just yet, though scrapes with doom inform LIFE'LL KILL YA's sensibility, and Zevon responds with his trademark gallows humor as well as a surprisingly lighter touch. Here, the excitable, piano-pounding artist surrounds himself with acoustic guitars, harmonicas, and pennywhistles; concise simplicity is the order of the day, and this sense of economy allows lines like "I can see me bound and gagged / Dragged behind the clown mobile" some breathing room. The arguable red herring is a bizarrely ...
| | Warren Zevon My Ride's Here CD (2002)
Old 97'S - Live review
$15.29 Tony Levin (bass); Anton Fig (drums); Jordan Zevon, David Letterman, Ariel Zevon (background vocals).
Warren Zevon's first release on the Artemis label, LIFE'LL KILL YA, stripped down his sound to bare bones, exposing in sharp relief his sardonic wit and undeniable songcraft. The follow-up MY RIDE'S HERE manages to return to the forceful, full-band rock sound of Zevon's salad days while keeping the quirky songwriting knack intact. Whether Zevon is singing about the violent exploits of a hockey player "Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)" or musing about Albert Einstein's way with the ladies ("Genius"), his knack for combining decidedly original (some might go so far as to say odd) subject matter with visceral rock riffs and catchy pop hooks remains intact. Zevon hasn't made the upper decks of the charts since the days of "Werewolves ...
| | Old 97's Drag It Up CD (2004)
Old 97'S - Live DVD
$13.35 In a just world, the Old 97's would have at least equaled the rise to fame of kindred spirits Whiskeytown. When head 97 Rhett Miller put out his major-label solo album, it seemed like he was all set to become the next Ryan Adams, and justifiably so. However, the late-'90s buzz around Miller and his band never quite translated to stardom. DRAG IT UP finds them on an indie label, the dust of hype suitably cleared; lo and behold, the result is one of their best albums ever.
The record opens with "Won't Be Home," whose surging roots-rock and locomotive rhythm are suggestive of "Time Bomb," the closest the 97's ever came to a hit. From there things rapidly shift direction, as "Moonlight" is an achingly pretty ballad that includes a nod to the Velvet Underground lullaby "After Hours." A honky-tonk piano and poetic, world-weary lyric enliven "Borrowed Bride," with its refrain of "life comes apart at the ...

Not only are his singing and material full of grit and emotional impact, there's a vintage Atlantic soul flavor to some of the tunes here that conjures up ...
