The immediate moment the vocals hit during the intro tune, "Shaken," every die-hard Dischord fan will be contemplating if Guy Picciotto has finally made good on his promise, has had enough of the sound of guitars, and has found solace in the frantic world of breakcore. Right at home with releases by Tigerbeat6 captain Kid 606 and fellow teammates Rip Off Artist and Cex, This Means Forever take cues from the frantic cut-and-paste philosophies and sense of humor the label is known for, but the warmth of the production throughout is what gives Drop the Lime a sense of distinction from his labelmates. Using children's sound effects, circus music, strings, and interludes from cartoon music soundtracks (and everything else that could stir up a child's nightmare), This Means Forever is a soundtrack to a surreal, demented carnival where everything that could possibly go wrong, does. It's brutal and punishing from start to finish, with the only relief found in the interludes. A very impressive debut record, indeed. ~ Rob Theakston

This Canadian import includes the original recording of "Spawn."
This release combines music videos and live performances from the Australian grunge band Silverchair. There are renditions of over one dozen songs, including "Emotion Sickness," "Israel's Son," "Freak," "Tomorrow," "Anthem for the Year 2000," and "Cemetery." ~ Perry Seibert
Arguably, Silverchair is to Pearl Jam and Nirvana what jazz great Sonny Stitt was to bebop king Charlie "Bird" Parker -- a derivative disciple, but impressive nonetheless. Stitt was no innovator; he was a follower instead of a leader. But he played his Bird-minded alto sax with so much conviction that you had to applaud him. And similarly, Silverchair was far superior to most of the Nirvana and Pearl Jam disciples who flooded the market in the 1990s. Even though none of the Australian power trio's 1990s material will win any awards for innovation, Silverchair usually did the "Nirvana meets Pearl Jam" thing a lot better than its contemporaries. Released in late 2000, The Best of Silverchair, Vol. 1 paints a generally attractive, if imperfect, picture of the band's 1994-1999 output. Most of Silverchair's essential 1990s recordings are provided, including "Tomorrow" and "Pure Massacre" from 1995's Frogstomp and "Cemetery," "Freak," and "Abuse Me" from 1997's Freak Show as well as "Emotion Sickness," "Trash," and the ballad "Ana's Song (Open Fire)" from 1999's Neon Ballroom. This album, one of a series under the Extended Versions rubric, is misleadingly named. The implication is that the material on this set of Winter-Derringer hits and bits has been re-recorded in the studio, but actually everything comes from a live performance in Tokyo, Japan. A classic inclusion is the closer, "Frankenstein," Winter's number one hit from 1973 that clocks in at 14:18, along with a cover of the McCoys' (Rick Derringer's first band) 1965 hit "Hang on Sloopy" and Derringer's solo breakthrough hit "Rock & Roll, Hootchie Koo," "Keep Playin' That Rock & Roll," "Free Ride," and "Teenage Love Affair." ~ Adrian Zupp

Clocking in at 14:18, this once-mighty instrumental is all but strangled with irksome filler, including one of the most ordinary drum solos in the history of recorded music, and a bunch of synth blipping that goes nowhere. Virtually all of the material on the disc suffers from a similar fate. Originally, the McCoys' (Rick Derringer's first band) 1965 hit "Hang on Sloopy" and Derringer's solo breakthrough hit "Rock & Roll, Hootchie Koo" were pretty flashy songs.
