| | Solo CD Michel Camilo Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Michel Camilo (piano). Liner Note Author: Bob Blumenthal. A powerhouse who is equally at home with straight-ahead jazz and Afro-Cuban music, Michel Camilo has been a household name in the jazz world ever since moving to the U.S. in 1979. Surprisingly, Solo is his first recording as a piano soloist without a group. Camilo divides the dozen songs between four Brazilian numbers (including Jobim's "Corcovado"), a quartet of familiar standards and four of his originals, three of which are new. Highlights include Camilo's Oscar Peterson-style stride on "Our Love Is Here to Stay," the romantic "Reflections," a rhythmic "'Round Midnight," the haunting "Atras Da Porta," the majestic "Un Son" and a sly version of Nat King Cole's "Frim Fram Sauce." Throughout Solo, Michel Camilo utilizes a light touch and generally emphasizes ballads and quieter material. Although Solo does not quite generate the same amount of excitement as Camilo's often-classic trio dates, he plays beautifully throughout. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] pleasant, gentle and, in places, quite beautiful studio record." **Super Audio CD (SACD) Hybrid** This CD will play in standard CD players. A Super Audio CD player is required to take advantage of the SACD sound technology. Solo
$8.45 Personnel: Johnny Coles (trumpet); Johnny Coles; Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Bob Cranshaw (double bass); Leo Wright (flute, alto saxophone); Duke Pearson (piano); Pete La Roca, Walter Perkins (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Authors: Duke Pearson; Bob Blumenthal. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (07/18/1963/08/09/1963). Photographer: Francis Wolff. Although this Blue Note session (reissued on CD in 1996) is led by trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Duke Pearson (who contributed the arrangements and five of the six compositions) really functioned as leader. The typically impressive Blue Note lineup (which includes Leo Wright on alto and flute, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and either Walter Perkins or Pete LaRoca on drums, in addition to Coles and Pearson) handles the obscure material with creative invention. Most memorable are the catchy title cut and the somber ballad "So Sweet My Little Girl." Cole's brittle trumpet is the lead voice throughout, although the young Joe Henderson was already instantly recognizable. ~ Scott Yanow Although this Blue Note session (reissued on CD in 1996) is led by trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Duke Pearson (who contributed the arrangements and five of the six compositions) really ...

| | Herb Alpert Going Places CD (1965) Remastered; Special Edition
Solo
$9.99 Liner Note Authors: Herb Alpert; Josh Kun. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were rolling right down the middle of the American pop scene like a locomotive in 1966 -- and this album captures them at the peak of their exuberance. By now, there really was a live, touring edition of the Tijuana Brass, and there was an easily identifiable TJB sound, with its strummed Latin American guitars, twin trumpet leads, delicate marimba or vibes (played by Julius Wechter of Baja Marimba Band fame in the studio), and strong grooves rooted in Latin American music, jazz and rock. Alpert's family of sidemen and composers were busy generating their own catchy hits, like Wechter's deadly infectious "Spanish Flea," and the tragically short-lived Ervan Coleman's wonderfully goofy "Tijuana Taxi." The bossman's trumpet could be joyous, ...

Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Dizzy Gillespie; Curly Russell (double bass); Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Don Byas (tenor saxophone); Al Haig (piano); Max Roach, Big Sid Catlett (drums). Liner Note Authors: Robert E. Sunenblick M.D.; Ted Kendall; Ira Gitler. Recording information: Town Hall, New York, NY (06/22/1945). Photographer: Charles B. Nadell. The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation ...
