| | Solo CD Michel Camilo Discography of CDs
A powerhouse who is equally at home with straight-ahead jazz and Afro-Cuban music, Michel Camilo has been a household name in the jazz world ever since moving to the U.S. in 1979. Surprisingly, Solo is his first recording as a piano soloist without a group. Camilo divides the dozen songs between four Brazilian numbers (including Jobim's "Corcovado"), a quartet of familiar standards and four of his originals, three of which are new. Highlights include Camilo's Oscar Peterson-style stride on "Our Love Is Here to Stay," the romantic "Reflections," a rhythmic "'Round Midnight," the haunting "Atras Da Porta," the majestic "Un Son" and a sly version of Nat King Cole's "Frim Fram Sauce." Throughout Solo, Michel Camilo utilizes a light touch and generally emphasizes ballads and quieter material. Although Solo does not quite generate the same amount of excitement as Camilo's often-classic trio dates, he plays beautifully throughout. ~ Scott Yanow

Solo album
$13.65 This live set finds jazz ambassador Wynton Marsalis doing what he does best--that is, playing straightforward, bop-inflected jazz with flawless technique. Marsalis pays homage to the masters with versions of Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Charlie Parker's ...
| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Solo CD music
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds weight to the underlying messages. Although it's difficult to express political outrage with jazz instrumentals, the LMO does exactly that on NOT IN OUR NAME, conveying discontent, sadness, and even hope with a potent, masterful set of songs.
With a cover that directly references bassist Charlie Haden's first recording under his own name, 1969's LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, this 2005 album features an updated version of the LMO ensemble. As on the earlier disc, ...
| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Solo music CDs
$9.65 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate to the aforementioned tragedy.
Yet the proceedings are never overwhelmed by pathos or grief. Instead, Rollins and his five-piece ensemble offer spirited takes on the standards "Where or When" and "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," and Rollins's own Latin-inflected "Global Warming." The wit, range, and dexterity that made the saxophonist's name are in evidence throughout, making WITHOUT A SONG a fine showcase for his ...
| | Mccoy Tyner Passion Dance CD (1978)
Solo songs
$9.89 Recorded in 1978 at Tokyo's Live Under the Sky festival. PASSION DANCE presents McCoy Tyner in top form. On two out of five tracks, the jazz pianist is accompanied by bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, who lay down a foundation of percolating rhythms that Tyner can deftly glide across. The interplay between the three revered musicians is nothing short of stunning, particularly on the energetic opening rendition of John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice." Equally notable, though, are Tyner's solo performances, ...
| | Michel Camilo Live At The Blue Note CDs (2003)
Solo album
$10.99 LIVE AT THE BLUE NOTE won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Fans of piano superman Michel Camilo had to wait a long time for this record, the first live album in his long career. The recording represents a series of firsts: in addition to premiering Camilo's live performance skills, it is his first documented work with the dynamic rhythm section of bassist Charles Flores and drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. It also features brand new compositions and radical re-working of old ones.
Captured during a weeklong tenure at the Blue Note in 2003, Camilo, Flores, and Hernandez display a stunning rapport reminiscent of the interplay between Bill Evans, Scott LeFaro, and Paul Motian on SUNDAY AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD. Much of the music is heavily Latin-flavored, as on the driving groove of "On the Other Hand," or the mix-match rhythms of "Dichotomy." A tongue-in-cheek rendition of "Tequila" keeps this superior ...
