| | Patsy Cline Gold CD Patsy Cline Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Does the world really need another Patsy Cline collection? It's a reasonable question, given how many are out there and how many feature the same material, and Gold in particular pushes the boundaries of the question, since the same two-disc set was previously released in 2000 with a different cover under the title The Ultimate Collection. Fortunately, Universal at least had the good sense to recycle one of their best Patsy Cline compilations; Gold's 32 tracks make for a broader view of Cline's career than the longtime favorite 12 Greatest Hits, but avoids the clutter of their four-disc box set, and the sequence gives this material a welcome sense of stylistic ebb and flow. (The new cover is also a lot more flattering than the slapdash artwork for The Ultimate Collection.) Most folks who already have a solid Patsy Cline collection aren't going to need this, but for those looking for a solid collection of great music from one of the finest vocalists of her generation, Gold is all the Patsy Cline most fans will ever need. ~ Mark Deming

Purchase Gold CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Neil Young Sleeps With Angels CDs (1994)
Gold album
$8.69 SLEEPS WITH ANGELS was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Judging by the regard with which Neil Young is embraced by contemporary bands, it's clear that this rocker retained his youthful crankiness and experimental verve--willfully oblivious to popular fashions. Like John Mellencamp's DANCE NAKED, Young's SLEEPS WITH ANGELS has the mythic feel and smell of vintage, crawl-under-the-car and change-the-oil rock and roll.
SLEEPS WITH ANGELS is produced in a simple, uncluttered, rootsy manner, full of gritty, earnest appeal. Young projects the grace of an elder mentor, aware of his own mortality ("Prime Of Life"), trying to save his friends from unnecessary grief, while gently prodding his wildest children ...
| | Deep Purple Machine Head CDs (1972) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Gold CD music
$10.69 This package contains the original MACHINE HEAD plus quadrophonic mixes of 2 songs on one disc, MACHINE HEAD remixed by Roger Glover in 1998, and a 28 page booklet.
A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
Yet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener "Highway Star," in which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Richie Blackmore trade off dazzling solos, to the churning "Space Truckin'," another riff-driven rocker. Vocalist Ian Gillian, whose dramatic, ...
| | Rainbow Rising CD (1976) Remastered
Gold music CDs
$7.29 As the drums kick into the fierce opener "Tarot Woman," it's obvious that RISING delivers directly to your door. It is the band's second release, and a vast improvement over RICHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. With a revamped lineup that sounds like it had been touring together for years, the album takes no prisoners. "Starstruck" is a classic groove reminiscent of guitarist Blackmore's ex-band Deep Purple. Blackmore replaced ...
| | Rainbow Long Live Rock 'N' Roll CD (1978) Remastered
Gold songs
$6.49 Released in 1978, LONG LIVE was the final Ronnie James Dio-fronted release by Rainbow. Dio would go on to front Black Sabbath, while guitarist Richie Blackmore would reunite with Deep Purple. The album caps off a string of tremendous releases from one of the strongest branches on the heavy-metal family tree.
The title track is a fan favorite and one of the strongest tunes from this era--a heavy rock tune written for arenas. "Lady ...
| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are? CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gold album
$10.45 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have ...

| | Michael Rose African Roots CD (2005)
Gold album
$13.89 This isn't really so much a Michael Rose album as it is a Ryan Moore (aka Twilight Circus Dub Sound System) album. It's one more product of Moore's welcome expansion from homemade, one-man-band instrumental dub -- of which he remains the world's finest exponent -- into a more generalized roots reggae production outfit. African Dub is primarily the remixed version of African Roots, Michael Rose's equally welcome return to the old-school roots fold following his long wanderings in the wilderness of conscious dancehall. Moore's production style is pretty heavily dub-flavored to begin with, so none of these remixes will sound especially drastic or adventurous to those who are used to the dub sound. But newcomers to the genre may be taken aback by the echoed shreds of vocal, the bottomless bass, the appearing-then-disappearing guitars and keyboards, and the generally enormous sonic space that Moore creates so skillfully. Note in particular the effective way he completely deconstructs the track about halfway through "Dub Thunder," and the way he preserves just enough of Rose's eerily sad and beautiful vocal on "Dub Burial" to retain the flavor of the original version, while busily knocking down the walls around it. And don't miss the guest appearance by fellow dubmeister Manasseh, either. Brilliant. ~ Rick Anderson
Michael Rose has been a stalwart of the roots reggae scene since his early days as a solo artist recording with producer Niney the Observer in the 1970s; he hit his commercial and artistic peak as lead singer for Black Uhuru during that band's most productive period, but his subsequent solo work has been quite respectable as well (if uneven). African Roots finds him on M Records, a label that has previously served as the exclusive home to Twilight Circus Dub Sound System, the one-man dub band otherwise known as Legendary Pink Dots bassist Ryan Moore. The combination of Rose's powerful vocals ...
| | Terry Allen Pedal Steel CD (2006)
Gold CD music
$15.05 Texas-based Terry Allen's country music vision is truly like no one else's, and emphatically in opposition to anything that has passed for country music in Nashville since the '70s. Thankfully, Sugar Hill has shown a commitment to issuing classic and not quite classic Allen albums from yesteryear, making lovely oddities like 1985's Pedal Steel available once again. Pedal Steel isn't a country music album with three- and four-minute songs about loving, cheatin', and Jesus. Instead, Allen has pieced together something like a radio play with dialog, background noises, and snippets of songs that tell the impressionistic tale of one steel guitar player who played rock & roll in the '60s and '70s. Initially, Pedal Steel -- believe it or not -- was written for the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company in San Francisco, and ...
