Elegant, cerebral piano trio jazz in the classic post-bop style, the debut album by pianist Ron Thomas (with Paul Klinefelter on acoustic bass and Joe Mullen on drums) is no mere dinner music set. A set of six originals structured as a sort of jazz sonata, Music in Three Parts is challenging but not difficult; there is little improvisation on display beyond some particularly extravagant bass flourishes by Klinefelter on the opening "Impromptu" and some discreet solo fills by Thomas on the playful "Caprice," but Music in Three Parts isn't some staid third-stream effort straining under the weight of its own solemnity. Thomas is too cannily melodic a player to get lost in the weeds during his solo showcases, and the rhythm section matches his lightness of tone with their own fluid, swinging attack. Proof that proper modern jazz can be appealing to an audience that doesn't know the MJQ from the AACM, Music in Three Parts neither panders nor overwhelms. ~ Stewart Mason

Ron Thomas' newest project for Art of Life Records, "Music In Three Parts", was recorded on Nov. 12, 2003 and features Paul Klinefelter on bass and Joe Mullen on drums. The pieces on this CD are based on only three different simple musical figures -- the

This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists were playing at once. Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the transition from swing to bebop effortlessly. Tatum's eclectic style also reflected influences from blues ...

CD $13.99  Top 500 Audio Samples
Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. It quotes liberally from "Wade in the Water" and "Hit the Road Jack," but is a stomping, raucous blues in its own right with the wide chromatic and harmonic range of the brass section on full display, and contains a smoking solo break by Hargrove. Some of the standards that really shine are an unusually restrained and utterly elegant "My Funny Valentine" ...

Love Songs Live!
Harry Allen Love Songs Live! CD  (2000) (Import) Import; Germany

Music In Three Parts songs
CD $20.39  Audio Samples
Recorded live between 1993 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Hans Nagel-Heyer. One of the more impressive "Young Lions" to come out of straight-ahead jazz in the 1990s was Harry Allen, a tenor saxophonist with a breathy, appealing tone along the lines of Stan Getz, Lester Young, and Zoot Sims. Allen (who shouldn't be confused with the hip-hop journalist) is no innovator; although Love Songs Live! was recorded live in different parts of Europe from 1993-1996, it recycles the jazz of the 1940s and 1950s. But there's no law stating that every jazz musician who comes along has to be an innovator; jazz has room for both innovators and traditionalists, and Allen is definitely an example of the latter. As its title indicates, this German release is a collection of live performances of ballads. Most of the time, Allen turns his attention to standards that jazz fans have heard time and time again, including "Stardust," "Every Time We Say Goodbye," "But Beautiful," and Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," and one can't help but wish that he would surprise us occasionally and make some less obvious choices. Instead of giving the jazz world yet another version of "Sweet ...

24bit digitally remastered Japanese limited edition in an LP-style slipcase. 100 GOLD FINGERS presents a collection of piano music. Remastered Japanese import. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. Personnel: Hank Jones , Harold Mabern, Junior Mance, Kenny Barron, Monty Alexander, Ray Bryant, Tommy Flanagan, Roger Kellaway, Cedar Walton (piano); Alan Dawson (drums). Liner Note Author: Yozo Iwanami. Recording information: 05/20/1990-05/30/1990. 100 Gold Fingers: Piano Playhouse is a portion of two concerts by a group of ten jazz pianists who toured Japan together, though only five are heard on each performance and no two keyboardists play with one another, with the occasional addition of a rhythm section (Bob Cranshaw and Alan Dawson). The song selection draws heavily from standards and timeless jazz compositions, especially works by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Richard Rodgers, though Ray Bryant, Monty Alexander and Cedar Walton each play at least one original. There are a few surprises, such as Harold Mabern's wild interpretation of "My Favorite Things," which he begins with an excerpt of another song from The Sound of Music ("Climb Every ...
