Bill Connors will always be best known for being the original guitarist with Chick Corea's Return to Forever, preceding Al DiMeola. After making one classic album (Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy), Connors left RtF and has had a lower profile ever since, spending some time exploring acoustic guitar. On 2004's Return, Connors is back on electric guitar but playing post-bop jazz rather than fusion and with a tone closer to Kenny Burrell than to DiMeola. His nine originals sometimes have catchy grooves but they are never predictable. Among the highlights are the bluish strut "Mr. Cool," the brooding ballad "McMinor" and the driving momentum of "Nobody Yet To" plus the one "cover tune," a lyrical rendition of John Coltrane's "Brasilia." Listeners coming to Bill Connors' Return without any preconceptions will enjoy this tasteful and subtle effort. ~ Scott Yanow

4 stars Nice and smooth
A very good outing indeed. The CD starts with On the edge a very nice upbeat tune. It then proceed with a nice ballad Mr. Cool. The rest of the album is of the same nature, very nice, very smooth music. I enjoyed Bill O'Connell piano playing and Lincoln Goines on bass provides with strong melodic bass lines. Connors mastery of the electric guitar is strong and the whole album is strong with no tunes serving as a filler. I recommend it strongly.

4 stars Don't Double Up Just Yet
Has anyone wondered why there has been so little talk about the new fusion monster recording by the RTF guitar great? Maybe it's because there is no new fusion recording by Bill Connors (it would not sell discs to say that, right?). Connors has been away for over 10 years (I guess only a hadful of close friends will ever know why), and this is a kind of "new" Conners, doing a whole new thing--and it is a representation of his wishes (not those that might have been hoping for a kind of refind Scott Henderson). This is a jazz guitar disc. Okay, so what's wrong with that? I have enough Henderson, Gambale, and other shreaders to last a while! Nothing is wrong with that, it's just that it is kind of samey. What!? Samey, you know, it is good, but there is little in the world of standerd mondern jazz to really recommend it. It's sort of the same old thing...done nicely, however. Oh, I really don't have the space or the extra dollars for something that is another "good jazz recording." Well, that's what it is, and I'm glad I have it, but if I didn't have much space or money, I would want somebody to tell me it's kind if a major mainstream shift, so I could make an informed buy. Don't get me wrong, I'm really glad to know he's okay and recording again, but you're saying be advised, it's not a power trio or neck burner. Yep, that's what I'm saying. Okay, I'll think about it.......

4 stars Excellent!
Great Jazz! Glad to have Bill Connors back. You don't feel overdosed with fusion and excessive high energy here. A great mix. Enjoyable and interesting, love the new guitar tone he's developed, I just hope he has more to follow.

5 stars The Best post bop with groove
I have not written a review recently. why? Nothing was truly original until this album came along. Mr. Connors has shown the ability to perform in many different contexts in the past, but this music is indescribable, as it crosses so many boundaries. Not heavy fusion, but more George Bension sound. The songs are original with fast riffs. This was a worthy endeavor because I can't remember anything quite like it.

Back On Track
Lulu Back On Track CD  (2004)

Return CD music
CD $10.45
BACK ON TRACK is a 2003, 12-track release featuring longstanding U.K. pop star, Lulu, and includes the tracks "Keep Talkin' I'm Listening" and "Sentimental Heart." Can anyone really have expected much of a new album by Lulu in 2004? Forty years after she shot to stardom in England and 37 years after she did the same -- briefly -- in America, she would seem to be part of the fraternity of older English popsters who periodically step into the studio for another go at recording, without too much heavy lifting. So how come she's giving 103-percent or more on Back on Track? And how come the title of this 2004 album is strangely appropriate? The look, as she peers out from the inner fold of the inlay card on the CD, is the same kind she gave us in 1964 -- the synthesized drums are something new, but otherwise, that raspy, bluesy voice competing with the electric lead guitar sound is not at all different from the 17-year-old who carried the Isley Brothers' "Shout" up the U.K. charts and parlayed it into a television and movie career. "Keep Talkin', I'm Listening" is the single and the lead-off track, but Lulu acquits herself well on "Now You Love Me," with its ringing guitar accompaniment, and plunges into harsher territory on "Slow Motion," a hard-rocking track that's a special surprise coming from the 56-year-old pop star. Then she ...

Long Way Home
Amy Gallatin Long Way Home CD  (1998)

Return songs
CD $15.19
Amy Gallatin, born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, lived in several states before settling in the West, where she was raised. During her ten years in Idaho and Montana, she had had the good fortune of being able to work at two of her loves in life: horses and music; Amy helped to organize the horseback riding programs and was the featured entertainer at various guest ranches. Her performing background had been as a solo artist out West prior to her meeting some Connecticut musicians while wintering in New England in 1992.

With that Connecticut connection came the opportunity to tour as a working unit, so Amy packed her guitar and moved east in the fall of 1993 to pursue her music. Four albums later (including a live album and a project recorded in Nashville with ace producer Rich Adler), Amy Gallatin and her band Stillwaters have taken the stage at some of the most prestigious venues in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. They were invited in 1996, '98, and 2003 to tour several European countries. Their most recent performances in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark drew extremely enthusiastic crowds at house concerts, music clubs, theaters, country & bluegrass festivals, and National Radio. Amy & Stillwaters represented the United States as the featured performers at the European World of Bluegrass convention in The Netherlands in May '98. Amy is at home singing various musical styles -- country, folk, bluegrass or western swing--branding each song with soulful sincerity. Her influences are diverse, ranging from old and contemporary cowboy tunes learned out West, to great country artists like Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, and the Everly Brothers, with even a dash of blues influence thrown in--Koko Taylor, Katie Wilson, BB King, and Shemekiah Copeland. She currently performs with renowned Dobroist Roger Williams, formerly with Southern Rail, Salamander Crossing, and White Mountain Bluegrass.
