Anberlin: Stephen Christian (vocals, guitar); Joseph Milligan (guitar); Deon Rexroat (bass guitar); Nathan Young (drums). Additional personnel: Phillip Sneed, Seth Roberts, Ryan Clark (vocals); Mike Weiss (guitar). Band names are getting dumber and dumber in the Christian rock world, even as the bands get better and better, the guitars bigger and tighter, and the hooks more and more irresistible. All of those trends are epitomized in the sophomore effort by Anberlin, which producer Aaron Sprinkle and engineer J.R. McNeely mixed in such a way as to best approximate the band's ferocious live energy. Try not to be put off by the pretentious song titles ("Audrey, Start the Revolution!," "[the symphony of] blasé," etc.) -- Anberlin is primarily concerned with sweeping you off your feet by means of huge, swooping melodies and rich harmonies, all powered by blunderbuss guitars and tightly structured production. "Paperthin Hymn" is one of the prettiest slabs of guitar rock released in the last ten years; "Stationary Stationery," despite its too-clever-by-half title, is one of the most perfect pop songs of 2004. "Runaways" somehow manages to sound simultaneously like Oingo Boingo and Loverboy -- someday someone is going to have to figure out how they did that. Of this album's 11 tracks, only two are less than brilliant, and only one of those (the superfluous instrumental "Heavy Hearted Work of Staggering Genius," har har) is less than very good. Very highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson In the liner notes preceding the lyrics to the title track of Anberlin's NEVER TAKE FRIENDSHIP PERSONAL, chief songwriter/lead vocalist Stephen Christian muses "you told me to 'write a song about it' so here's your song." That comment pretty well sums up this Florida outfit, a fiery rock quintet that lives earnestly inside of its songs. Similar to Jimmy Eat World, Anberlin is able to strike a balance between cerebral lyrics and universal observations, between artful compositions and hooky guitar riffs. Like many of its peers on Tooth & Nail Records, Anberlin comes from a Christian-rock angle, but that trait isn't worn on the band's collective sleeve. While images of saints and sinners abound, only two somber cries for divine help, "Paperthin Hymn" and "(The Symphony Of) Blase," have overt religious tones. Most of the torrentially moving songs within this sophomore effort deal with the universally affecting themes of finding love, knowledge, and peace, and losing them all. Christian's vocals strut with confidence yet break with uncertainty and heartache at every turn. As Christian unfolds his poems of hope and yearning, Anberlin's guitar-fueled rock backs him with the perfect ratio of ebb to flow. With NEVER TAKE FRIENDSHIP PERSONAL, Anberlin hits a comfortable stride that's sure to garner the band even more fans. Personnel: Stephen Christian (vocals); Joey Bruce (guitar); Nathan Young (drums). Audio Mixers: J.R. McNeely; Aaron Sprinkle. Recording information: The New Compound Studios, Seattle, WA. Seattle's Tooth & Nail has developed a reputation as the home for positive-thinking, hookalicious pop-punk and alternative combos, many sporting fancy haircuts and a Christian-influenced worldview. Anberlin fits this mold. Led by the soaring, slightly froggy-voiced vocals of Stephen Christian, the band also includes Joseph Milligan (guitar), Nathan Young (drums), Joey Bruce (guitar), and Deon Rexroat (bass). Blueprints for the Black Market features 11 songs buffed to a gleaming finish by producer Aaron Sprinkle, ex of Christian ...
| | Underoath They're Only Chasing Safety CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Never Take Friendship Personal
$11.89 Underoath: Spencer Chamberlain (vocals); James Smith, Timothy McTague (guitar); Christopher Dudley (keyboards); Grant Brandell (bass guitar); Aaron Gillespie (drums, background vocals). Whether you describe this type of alternative rock as screamo, post-hardcore, or melodic hardcore, albums like They're Only Chasing Safety are all about contrasts -- heaven contrasting with hell, melody contrasting with sledgehammer brutality, "normal" singing (whatever "normal" is) contrasting with tortured, agonized, death-all-over-your-face screaming. This screamo/post-hardcore/melodic hardcore approach is quite different from full-fledged metalcore; while metalcore units like Hatebreed, ...

| | Don Cherry Hear And Now CD (1976) Reissue
Never Take Friendship Personal
$9.69 Hear and Now's cover depicts a smiling Cherry posing like Buddha, and holding a trumpet with a bent mouthpiece -- an indication of some meditative sounds, but it's really a mishmash of styles with a leaning toward African rhythms. An underlying social message runs through the album of Cherry compositions (except one) produced by Narada Michael Walden. Cherry plays very little trumpet on "Universal Mother"; the African-based excursion is carried by Neil Jason's bass, Sammy Figueroa's congas, and Raphael Cruz's percussion work. He plays stretching, calling trumpet notes on "Karmapa Chenno"; African ...
| | Stormbringer Coming! CD (2008)
Never Take Friendship Personal
$17.69 „We want to make music, we really love“ - that was the general chorus when we finished our first meeting about forming Stormbringer in autumn 2000. After years of destraction from our real rockroots - we five came from different directions: Jazz, Folk, Funk, Heavy Metal,... - we longed to play the music we grew up with: Purple, Stones, Toto, AC/DC, Whitesnake, Aerosmith etc. After a few rehearsals we headed for the stage and had some really fine gigs in Burgenland, most of them in front of approx. 300 listeners.Soon we began to play our own songs and (rather successfully) took part in some band contests in Burgenland and Vienna. Before we recorded our first promo CD including the songs ...
