(2 Customer Reviews)
Archer Prewitt's fourth full-length solo album, WILDERNESS, is a culmination of the orchestral-pop ambitions strongly hinted at in his previous releases--THREE, WHITE SKY, and IN THE SUN. Long, languid pieces like "O, KY" and "Judy, Judy" twist and turn through successive movements and tempos, while Prewitt's way with an evocative lyric and a hummable tune is undiminished.
Prewitt conjures memories of ex-Zombies lead singer Colin Blunstone's solo albums on the caustic "Cheap Rhyme" and the magnificent title track, aided by the orchestrations of Susan Voelz and Max Crawford. The gorgeous "No More" simultaneously evokes early Pink Floyd, 1970s Britpop pioneers 10cc, and the melancholy acoustic textures of doomed British singer/songwriter Nick Drake. An occasional member of the Sea & Cake, Prewitt confidently steers his ensemble through lush orchestral thickets and dizzying time-signature changes on these mini-opuses, giving a strong indication that his own time in the spotlight will not be long in coming.

Entertainment Weekly (p.88) - "[L]anguidly pretty, the love-and-death songs are delicate and fluttery..." - Grade: A- Uncut (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 - "His gentle voice sits amid occasionally baroque arrangements, the simplicity of which ensure his more complex songwriting skills remain accessible." Magnet (p.105) - "Prewitt has honed his vocal art to a fine edge....'Cheap Rhyme' finds him unleashing a contrapuntal cascade of brass and woodwinds, as irresistible a force of nature as falling into a flood-gorged river." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The album showcases Prewitt as an original melodic writer and arranger, and he's gathered together a fine band of multi-instrumentalists." | Wilderness Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Wonderful album I did know the work of Archer Prewitt from his comics & music with the Coctails but i didn't listened to his solo output until today. Oh boy, i was wrong!!! There's a lot singer songwriter around but Mr Prewitt his on the top of the game- The music is folk/rock so believe me it's quite difficult to be original & personal, but our fella from Chicago achieved it-
So i highly recommend this fresh & exiting record, you won't regret it- Submitted by d-luxe (Rouen, France) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Masterpiece! This album is a masterpiece! Archer Prewitt is a fantastic musician, song writer, and artist (the cover he drew himself). I don't know which album I like better, this one, or "Three" but they're both amazing, and you should check both of them out. Submitted by Steven (Branford, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Wilderness
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime ...

| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Wilderness
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," ...

| | Sam Prekop Who's Your New Professor CD (2005)
Wilderness
$13.05 Sam Prekop's sophomore solo album coasts sweetly along through the expected layers of treated guitar harmonics, snappy drums, and crisp production, all enhancing the sunny Sunday-mellow groove. The difference from its precursor comes with close listening, wherein one can discern the many elaborate touches of producer John McEntire (Tortoise). The bossa nova elements of Prekop's self-titled debut ...

$17.69 Originally released in 2001 on Bobsled Records and re-released by Kill Rock Stars a year later, Stereo Total's Musique Automatique pares the group down to the core duo of Francoise Cactus and Brezel Goring. In the process, the album gains a newfound polish, particularly in the production, but also loses some of the spontaneous energy and wide-ranging influences that characterize the rest of Stereo Total's work. Sometimes this clean and glossy approach works: the endearingly ...
