Exile album
$12.69 Immortal's Nuclear Blast debut, and this Norwegian trio's seventh album to date, Sons of Northern Darkness, marks a monumental statement that reverberates throughout the black metal community. Sons of Northern Darkness is arguably one of the best black metal releases ever put forth, as it fully articulates what many other bands of this nature fail to embrace. Thick, meaty riffs dominate the album, as guitarist Abbath shreds the competition with mind-blowing melody and relentlessly brutal power. Abbath also controls vocal duty, and though his voice is darkly sinister, it holds a slight fringe of harmony that fleshes out each song. Add to that Iscariah's fiendish bass playing underlying Sons of Northern Darkness with an evil authority, while Horge's drumming decimates the competition with jackhammer beats. The fantastical lyrics allow the band to venture into fictitious territory, and each song carries the feeling that you are witnessing a marvelous novel unfold in front of your eyes. Songs like the epic "Tyrants" build to an earth-shattering crescendo of outlandish noise, yet one is never left disappointed. Sons of Northern ...
| | Dark Funeral Secrets Of The Black Arts CDs (1997) (Import) Bonus CD; Sweden
Exile CD music
$15.69 Led by guitarist Lord Ahriman, Sweden's Dark Funeral made its full-length debut with 1996's The Secrets of the Black Arts, a rather predictable -- if extremely enthusiastic -- collection of typically vicious Scandinavian black metal. Unlike its more adventurous Norwegian neighbors Mayhem, Emperor, et al., Dark Funeral seems to know only one speed (full) and one volume (11), resulting in a continuous, unchanging aural bludgeoning that will simply bore all but those most committed to pissing off their parents. Simply put, these guys know nothing about tension and release. Where the aforementioned bands use eerie synths, ...

| | Fairport Convention Full House CD (1970) Remastered
Exile songs
$12.19 This incarnation of Fairport Convention was their first without a female voice (and, with the exception of Denny's brief return in the mid-seventies, they would remain that way henceforth). Still, barring the non-singing drummer Dave Mattacks, they possessed a quartet of sympathetically harmonic singers. The writing team of guitarist Richard Thompson and fiddler Dave Swarbrick came up with a trio of classics in "Walk Awhile, " "Sloth, " and "Doctor of Physick, " but it was a teaming that was to prove short-lived, as Thompson departed before the next studio album. They did however make one trip to the USA and are captured live on their follow-up release HOUSE FULL.
