| | Bird & The Bee Bird And The Bee CD (2006)
Acropolis
$9.45 There have been many duos in the history of pop music, but few, if any, like the Bird and the Bee. Consisting of Greg Kurstin (all instruments except horns) and Inara George (vocals, and daughter of late Little Feat guitarist Lowell George), Bird and the Bee craft sleek, refined pop songs rich with edgy humor, all seductively conveyed by George's distinctively cool, feathery voice. With its elegant mix of alt-rock catchiness (think Blondie, XTC, Stereolab) and some Brazilian bossa nova touches, THE BIRD AND THE BEE is a noteworthy debut disc. As a label, Blue Note has been changing its focus, drifting closer and closer to mainstream pop material -- not that there's anything wrong with this, but it is a bit of a shock that the name label in jazz since 1939 is looking for hits with Elisabeth Withers and a third Norah Jones offering. That said, the Metro Blue imprint of the label is as adventurous as ever, and the self-titled offering from the Bird and the Bee is about as eclectic as it gets. The Bird and the Bee are vocalist and songwriter Inara ...

Audio Mixer: Jamie Saft. Recording information: Frank Booth, Brooklyn, NY (05/1997-??/2002); K Studio (05/1997-??/2002). Photographer: Lloyd Wolf. Unknown Contributor Role: Hearn Gadbois. Arranger: Frank London. Frank London has been threatening for years to make a record like Scientist at Work. It's funny, but it took the help of John Zorn in the role of re-producer to make that happen. Scientist at Work was originally issued on a private label in 1999 in a very small print run. Earlier this year, Zorn was given access to the tapes and completely re-worked the material by remixing, editing, and adding substantial overdubs to the original. The result sounds more like a collaboration, though London's original voice is never sacrificed. All hype aside, this is one of the finest records to ever come out on this label, and may be the finest moment of London's ...
