Released in March 1976, Status Quo's ninth album was, depending upon how one viewed the last six years of relentless boogie, either the last of the band's "classic" LPs or the first step toward absolute household name-dom that the group has enjoyed ever since. In fact, of course, it was both. At its best -- the punchy (and almost presciently punkish) "Is There a Better Way," the sleazy barroom vibe of the title track, and the six-minute closer, "Mystery Song" -- Blue for You married vintage Quo with a progressive eye that boded well for at least another few albums' worth of quality quo-tations. Elsewhere, however, "Rolling Home," "That's a Fact," and "Rain" suggested a paint-by-numbers approach that hadn't simply isolated all the ingredients that brought the band its mass appeal, it then boiled them down to the lowest common denominator as well. The arrival, a little more than a year later, of "Rockin' All Over the World" would unequivocally prove which option they preferred. But Blue for You proves that at least they had a choice. ~ Dave Thompson

| | Queen Jazz CD (1978)
Blue For You
$12.59 In 1978, all eyes were on Queen as they released the follow-up to their monster global hit NEWS OF THE WORLD. Predictably, JAZZ didn't achieve the massive commercial success of it's predecessor, but in aesthetic terms, it's a solid statement, and a marked progression of the band's musical vision. Though the band was already well into their "eclectic" mode by this time, the stylistic ventures the band takes on this album bring them even further afield from the heavy rock they're best known for.
Freddie Mercury kicks things off with "Mustapha," a nod to his Middle Eastern origins. Queen exhibits a ribald sense of humour on "Fat Bottomed Girls." Mercury indulges his Broadway tendencies to the hilt on "IF You Can't Beat Them" and "Don't Stop Me Now," which sound like they could have come from some obscure '50s musical. The jazzy "Dreamer's Ball" and the mellow, romantic "In Only Seven Days" provide welcome contrast. Amid all this eclecticism, though, the standout tracks are the propulsive rockers "Let Me Entertain You" (whose promise they fulfill) and "Dead on Time."
Famously tagged as "fascist" in a Rolling Stone review printed at the time of its 1978 release, Jazz does indeed showcase a band that does thrive upon its power, thrilling upon the hold that it has on its audience. That confidence, that self-intoxication, was hinted at on News of the World but it takes full flower here, and that assurance acts as a cohesive device, turning this into one of Queen's sleekest albums. Like its patchwork predecessor, Jazz also dabbles in a bunch of different sounds -- that's a perennial problem ...

Blue For You
$10.85 Sorta. It is an explanation given again and again, but the name says it all. The music isnt alt-country, roots rock or pop. Its sorta all of those things. With songs about love, birth, loss, loneliness and murder, Sorta encompasses everything under the sun. With a brand new album and a brand new member, Sorta is reaching a new level of sound and song writing rarely seen in todays music environment. What singer/guitarist Trey Johnson and bassist Danny Balis started as a two man band has evolved into a six-piece sonic boom of musical magic. Drummer Trey Carmichael and the three-pronged multi-instrumentalist attack of Carter Albrecht, Ward Williams and Chris Holt add so much to the vision Johnson and Balis shared six years ago. The reason the band was created was to write good songs and play the music they wanted to play, but what Johnson, Balis, Albrecht, Williams and Carmichael produced was a one of kind band.During the six years of Sorta, numerous people have taken note of the band and the eclectic sound they continue to generate. In 2004, Sorta released Sweet Little Bay to a wildfire of fanfare and critical success. The album was lauded for its original direction in several music publications and was named the ..3 album of 2004 by KERA, landing the band a spot just behind Texas legends Willie Nelson and Norah Jones. Of course, what KERA was treated to in 2004, true fans of Sorta had witnessed for years. The band, and some of the individual members, have been nominated an amazing times for the Dallas Observer Music Awards. The most recent nomination lead to Sorta being named Best Act Overall for 2006 at the ceremony in May. In addition to the Sorta accolades, three members of the band have been recognized for their individual talents. Albrecht and Johnson were honored ...
