When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal releases by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) the album brought this new musical form to the forefront.
The members of Anthrax were a bunch of comic-book-reading, jam-wearing heavy metal fans from NYC, and the music reflects the lifestyle. The band based it's U.K. Top-30 hit single "I Am the Law" on a favorite comic-book character (Judge Dread). "Imitation Of Life," a song about phony people that contains one of thrash metal's strongest riffs, was pointedly directed at '80s glam metal bands. The frantic "Caught In A Mosh" is an album highlight, as are "Indians" (which deals with the plight of the Native American), "N.F.L.," "Skeletons In The Closet," and the title track.

Halfway through "Aim to Choose," a cut off Mira's evocative debut, Can't Wait, the singer asserts the album's theme: In these uncertain days, trying to find my place/I know what's going on, singing my life's true song. Mira began recording Can't Wait in 2002, when she was grappling with one of life's great mythical labors: making it in New York. The city itself is almost never invoked on the album, but the sense of internal and external toil, and the pursuit of an ultimate freedom that pervade Can't Wait, is all Gotham. Consequently, whether it's a song of solitude ("I Suppose") or of passion ("Watch Yourself"), this album is ultimately an ode to struggle and self-discovery.It's also a monument to eclecticism. Mira hails from Seattle, and Can't Wait revels in her hometown's diverse musical scene. This collection of songs is also intensely personal; many of Mira's musical interests were influenced by her father, whose record collection spanned everything from classical to roots reggae. With this colorful musical foundation, Mira began singing at the age of 10, but she took time to live and learn before recording this album. She graduated from Seattle University with bachelors degrees in both political science and humanities. Always one for dramatic flair, Mira also spent time in the theater, which polished her talent for translating raw emotion into familiar messages that speak to the soul.Mira first ventured to New York in 1997 to pursue music. Can't Wait is the captivating climax of that experience. Most of this album is a collaboration with a few producers, one of them Jeremiah Vancans. Mira and Vancans worked together earlier in the band Version 2, which mixed live instruments with laptop generated samples, tight grooves and sultry vocals. Version 2 performed at many venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, and you can hear the band featured on "That's All Right."
