Performers include Dottie & Millie, Danny Monday, Roscoe Robinson, Ike & Tina Turner, S.O.U.L., Lee Moses, Curtis Lee, Shirelles.
Best known as the touring DJ with trip-hop pioneers Portishead, Andy Smith's previous compilation CDs proved him a mixologist of uncommon skill and taste, dexterous and batsh*t-crazy enough to weave Kate Bush,Ultramagnetic MC's and Three Dog Night into a seamless whole. With the self-explanatory Andy Smith's Northern Soul, he also proves himself a crate-digger par excellence -- born of his regular Northern sets at London's Jazz Café, this 26-cut mix bypasses traditional crowd-pleasers to plunge fully into the realm of vintage soul obscurities rarely, if ever, resurrected in the digital era. But Northern purists should also be forewarned that Smith mixes his tracks together in contemporary DJ style -- "I for one would buy a CD of a night at the Casino or the Twisted Wheel and would have marveled at the DJ's selections and announcements," he argues in his liner notes, and assuming the disc is indeed representative of a typical Jazz Café set, it's hard to argue with his logic. Highlights include Curtis Lee's "Is She in Your Town?," Bob & Earl's "My Little Girl" and the Charmels' "As Long as I've Got You." ~ Jason Ankeny
This is a brand new 26 track mix compilation by Andy Smith, late of Portishead, compiler of the massive-selling "Document" series. Andy explores his love of Northern Soul, highlighting here many records that have been storming dancefloors at his night "AMojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]n album that traces the history of the idiom with popular spins from the landmark venues..." Andy Smith's Northern Soul album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night.

Andy Smith's Northern Soul CD music
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not ...

| | Visible Breath Degrees Of Light CD (2007)
Andy Smith's Northern Soul CD music
$11.49 The "Degrees of Light" project first started to take shape back in 2004 shortly after the release of the "Fuse" CD. The first half of the album which is occupied by the 30min concept "First Orbit" sort of happened when I started thinking about what it must have been like to be the first man to orbit the Earth while not really knowing the chances of getting back or even what the effects of weightlessness would be on a human being. The pioneering spirit and faith in your ground crew (who keep control of the Vostok 1 spacecraft during the flight) would need to have been total. So many firsts, so many unknowns and almost not making it! Just before re-entry, the strap attaching the service module to the capsule failed to let go resulting in the two sections spinning out of control until the strap burnt through from the heat of re-entry.But more than the technical achievements of this flight, this is about the man [Yuri Gagarin] and the part his thoughts and emotions must have played while seeing the blue planet from a perspective that no one had experienced before and only a select few since.“Nocturnesâ€, ...
