Winner of the 1999 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Competition, the Seattle-based trumpeter Marriott Thomas made his mark in New York over the last 5 years in performances with Rosemary Clooney, Bob Berg, Bebe Valdez, Joe Locke and world tours with May
Personnel: Thomas Marriott (trumpet, flugelhorn); Thomas Marriott; Jeff Johnson (double bass); John Bishop (drums); Rick Mandyck (alto saxophone); David Budway (piano, electric piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Joe Locke (vibraphone). Audio Mixer: Floyd Reitsman. Recording information: Studio Litho, Seattle, WA (09/01/2004). Photographer: Steve Robinson . Arrangers: Joe Locke; David Marriott, Jr. The opening "Sing a Song" puts the focus on Thomas Marriott's trumpet tone and mostly features him playing long tones. The next two selections, "Domino City" and "Tout de Suite," are a bit of a contrast, for they showcase Marriott in a group that recalls Miles Davis' early fusion days, circa 1969-1971. Marriott and altoist Rick Mandyck, the latter on those two numbers but regrettably only one other cut, work together particularly well, and David Budway's Fender Rhodes piano is perfect for this setting. After the playful if slightly melancholy "Baby Mine," the driving "Mission" has Marriott and the returning Mandyck emulating the mid-'60s Miles Davis Quintet. The downbeat ballad "Love You Tonight," a spirited "Individuation," and a brooding "Returning" conclude the program. The performances are uplifted by the vibraphone of Joe Locke on four of the eight selections. Marriott is a versatile player with strong potential, and his thoughtful set grows in interest with each listening. ~ Scott Yanow

Individuation
$12.85 This release includes a bonus DVD featuring live performances of "Lulu's Back In Town," "Blue Monk," and "Round Midnight." Personnel includes: Thelonious Monk (piano); Charlie Rouse (saxophone); Larry Gales (bass); Ben Riley (drums). Recorded live at The Olympia, Paris, France on March 7, 1965. The DVD tracks were recorded in Oslo, Norway in 1966. Joel Dorn's Hyena Records has been busy with partnerships. This one centers on the estate of Thelonious Monk. The label Thelonious Records was formed by Monk's son T.S. Monk and Peter Grain to open its vaults for the first time and issue unreleased live recordings that were both officially sanctioned and bootlegged. If this set, the second of a two- night engagement at Paris' famed Olympia Theater in 1965, is any indication of the quality and inspiration of these performances, Monk fans definitely have something to look forward to besides reissues. On this double-disc set -- the concert on one CD and a DVD of Monk and his quartet ...

Photographer: Robert "RX Lord" Lewis. Enrico Rava's restrained trumpet playing has been regarded in modern times as perfectly reflective of the ECM sound. It is wrapped in European classical music while displaying a lyricism that goes beyond strict tonality, reaching for a soulful arena that only he can claim in the post-Miles Davis era. The emerging pianist Stefano Bollani joins Rava and veteran drummer Paul Motian for this contrabass-less trio that uses a downplayed sonic footprint, at times ethereal, but ...

Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. Photographer: Francisco Cruz. It was inevitable that VH1 would eventually release compilations spun off from some of their most popular nostalgia programs. Just before the channel rolled out the I Love the '90s series, in apparent response to the success of I Love the '70s and I Love the '80s, they teamed with Rhino to release a disc for each decade. Of course, it would be impossible to summarize ten years of popular music on one disc, so neither VH1 nor Rhino can be faulted for failing to be the least bit definitive. That's clearly not the goal to begin with. I Love the '70s naturally contains several songs that have appeared on hundreds of compilations -- such as Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly," KC & the Sunshine Band's "That's the Way I Like It," Chic's "Le Freak," and the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" -- but it does throw in a few curve balls to keep it from being just another '70s-themed disc. Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman," John Sebastian's "Welcome Back," and perhaps even Bread's "Make It With You" are either guilty ...
