Two critically acclaimed Animé films from masters of the form are collected together here: Mamoru Oshii's GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE and Satoshi Kon's MILLENNIUM ACTRESS.
Director Mamoru Oshii follows up his adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga in the Animé film GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE. Similar in concept and theme to the cyberpunk classic BLADE RUNNER, GHOST IN THE SHELL features a future where humans can modify their bodies with technology and live side-by-side with androids. A few years after the original film, police cyborg Bato is still mourning the loss of his partner Motoko. Bato and his new partner Togusa undertake an investigation of a series of seedy murders of wealthy men at the hands of their malfunctioning sex-androids. Expanding on the subject matter of the first film, their inquiry leads to a consideration of the true differences, if any, between humans and the artificial beings they create. GHOST IN THE SHELL 2 combines action, philosophy, and breathtaking animated visuals; and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
The creative love child of Animé director Satoshi Kon and screenwriter Sadayuki Mura (PERFECT BLUE), MILLENNIUM ACTRESS recounts the legend of an actress named Chiyoko Fujiwara who mysteriously disappeared during her greatest moment of fame. Via a sweeping backdrop of historical and fictional events that breathlessly span time, Chiyoko relates her saga to a documentary filmmaker named Genya who has tracked the actress down to her remote hideaway. As the story unfolds, Chiyoko's personal history becomes inextricably intertwined with the characters she plays in the movies throughout her long career, all in pursuit of her first love, a political activist painter who left her only with a mysterious key that sets the whole story in motion. Along the way Chiyoko's quest is hampered by an older actress and a mysterious scarfaced man. Luckily, Genya and his sardonic cameraman find themselves swept up in the story also, and come to her rescue several times. It all may sound a little odd, and western audiences not used to Animé's occasionally static style may take a few minutes to adjust, but once they do, countless rewards await: brilliant animation, a treasure trove of insight into Japan's history and film industry, and for anyone who's ever loved and lost, an almost assured shedding of many heartfelt tears. $11.19 Tekken Tag Tournament is a lightning fast port of the arcade game that boasts a 20-fighter plus cast of characters and one of the most famous control methods in gaming -- one button per limb. In addition, it has evolved from a conventional one-to-one competition into a tag battle with two characters for each team. Gamers can even choose to play against three friends using a multi-tap, participate in a traditional two-player tournament, or hone their fighting skills against the computer. Other features for TTT include enhanced visuals over the arcade version and additional game modes.
It should come as no surprise that Tekken Tag Tournament will hit the shelves on PS2's opening day. It first appeared as a tech demo way back when - and damn, did it look good. And while the game may not look as convincingly realistic as it did back ...
