Staying true to her father's vision of diversity in music, his daughter Polly organized Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons. She recruited both close friends and ardent fans of her father and his music as well as contemporary artists inspired by his work and vision. Featured performers include John Doe, Steve Earle, Kathleen Edwards, Jay Farrar, House of Blues Gospel Choir, Jim James, Norah Jones, Jim Lauderdale, Raul Malo, Susan Marshall, Keith Richards, Lucinda Williams, and Dwight Yoakam. This tribute concert to legendary country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons is a moment in rock history that stands on its own. Organized by his daughter Polly Parsons, it showcases the diverse range of talent that Parsons' music came to influence and which, sadly, he never lived to witness. Coming together at the Santa Barbara Bowl on July 9, 2004, the lineup bears witness to Parsons' extraordinary range and belief in music's diversity, which was showcased in his work with The Flying Burrito and The Byrds, as well as his solo releases. Backed by the Sin City All Stars, performers such as John Doe (formerly of the X), Steve Earle, Kathleen Edwards, Jay Farrar (ex-Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt), The House of Blues Gospel Choir, Jim James, Norah Jones, Jim Lauderdale, Raul Malo, Susan Marshall, Keith Richards, Lucinda Williams, and Dwight Yoakam, all pay tribute to this singular voice in music.

Return To Sin City - A Tribute To Gram Parsons Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) great tribute to GP Gram Parsons was an innovator in the country rock scene in the late 1960's and early 1970's. This was a fine tribute to the music of Gram Parsons, hosted by his daughter Polly. I really enjoyed all the contributing artists, but the artists that stood out for me were Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle and Dwight Yoakam. Any tribute to GP should be well received by country rock fans. Submitted by MikeSwyers (Millstadt, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Most Excellent! Being a Dwight Yoakam fan...I purchased this cd for his performance alone. I was very impressed by all the performances. Raul Malo; Norah Jones & Keith Richards "Love Hurts" was great! Enjoyable DVD well worth the purchase price. Submitted by tnacbell (Knoxville TN USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of my favorites If you love music, you should have this in your collection. I never realized the depth of Gram Parsons's writing, not to mention the music- truly sublime.I can't say enough good things about this DVD, why can't I find it on CD? I watch this at least 3 times a month and it gets better every time. Dwight's performance is electrifying, Norah Jones sounds like a soulful angel, Lucinda Williams gives a performance that harkens back to the days of Hank Williams himself, a nitty gritty voice that evokes so much emotion that I think I saw a tear in James Burton's eye. You won't believe how beautiful Keith Richards's version of hickory wind is- I will be hearing that in my mind forever. I'm sorry but it just doesn't get that much better than this. Return To Sin City - A Tribute To Gram Parsons DVD The late, great Gram Parsons refused to let anyone call his music "country rock." With the soul of a true cowboy, he just couldn't be fenced in. His vision was much more grandiose than the words "country rock" would allow. The cosmic American music of Gram Parsons celebrated diversity. Sure, the broken hearted sentiment of country music was firmly rooted in his musical upbringing. But so was the burning urgency of soul music's dramatic melodies as well as the sweet, uplifting, revelatory harmonies of gospel choirs and of course the hip shaking, hand clapping strut and boogie of rock and roll music. Thirty years after his untimely death in Joshua Tree, CA., musicians and music lovers still name check Gram Parsons with the utmost awe and respect. He saw beyond labels and boundaries in music and in life. In his time he influenced the music of his protege Emmylou Harris, as well as his friends the Rolling Stones and the Byrds. He was the first longhair country boy-just ask any of the outlaws from Willie Nelson to Kris Kristofferson-someone who could bring country music to the closed minds of those who previously dismissed it as "hillbilly" or "hick" while turning on many a good ol' boy to the sounds of sweet soul music. Staying true to her father's vision of diversity in music, his daughter Polly organized Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons. She recruited both close friends and ardent fans of her father and his music as well as contemporary artists inspired by his work and vision.
